Lamb County residents gathered to honor those who have served in the United States military services on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Littlefield High School Wildcat Gym.

The program opened with the singing of the National Anthem led by Toni Meredith, the music teacher at Littlefield Primary School. The Pledges were then led by Dylon Redmon.

Littlefield High School principal, Mrs. Amber Hays welcomed all present and gave a brief address on the history and purpose of Veterans’ Day.

Hays then introduced the keynote speaker, Coach Jimmy Thomas of Littlefield High School who reflected on his own experiences as a Hospital Corpman from 1989-1993 in the U.S. Navy. He stated that “I earned a Bachelors degree and went on to get a Master’s Degree, but I learned much more from my experiences in the Navy. I strongly feel the Navy did more for me, than I ever did for the Navy.”” Following Coach Thomas’s address, Dylon Redmon, President of Student Council; Mallory Marquez, President of TAFE; Ruth Alvarez, Spanish Club President; Ian Cozart, President of FFA; Danielle Zapata, President of NHS; and Abby Bass, President of the Art Club respectfully, introduced all the veterans present, their branch of service and years served.

Following the acknowledgments of the veterans present, Toni Meredith led the Second Grade Choir in a presentation of “God Bless America” and “Armed Forces Melody” which featured the songs of the Army, National Guard, Navy, Marines, and Air Force.

In honor of the veterans who are no longer with us, the entire assembly rose as Mallory Marquez of the LHS band performed TAPS.

In preparation for Veterans Day, an essay contest was held. The winners of the contest presented their winning essays. The 9 th grade winner was T’aijae Chambers; 10th grade winner was Kamryn Meiwes; 11th grade winner was Tori Roque; and 12th grade winner was Levy Hernandez.

Following the essay presentations, the LHS Thespians presented a short skit.
