Need of a Savior...

Nostalgia TV networks frequently air 'Young at Heart' during the Christmas season. The 1950’s classic starred Doris Day and Frank Sinatra. As a viewer, I have empathized with the fictional movie's characters. They celebrated and grieved individually and as part of a close-knit family. The film cameramen captured images of a traditional Christmas tree; mistletoe, snow, and flickering fireplace flames. Scriptwriters tucked truth into the fictional plot; we don't always find happiness during Christmas.

Doris Day in the role of Lori and Frank Sinatra as Barney eloped. It was not marital bliss. The couple struggled to make ends meet on his meager income as a songwriter and piano player. As a result, he felt like a failure as man and mate. Lori learned that she was expecting their first child and decided to give him the wonderful news as his Christmas present.

Tragically, before time afforded the opportunity, he succumbed to depression and attempted to take his own life. He used speed as deadly weapon while driving in a blizzard. God was about to bring a new life into the world. The father of an unborn child tried to end his.

The movie is a tearjerker; fortunately, the writer and director gave us a happy-ending. Barney recovered from critical injuries and his career got back on track.

A son was born to Lori and Barney. A Son is born to God's people.

Jesus did not come to utopia; he came to a world of spiritual darkness. Christ Jesus came to a people in dire need of a Savior.
