Wednesday was National Signing Day for high school athletes across the nation. Littlefield senior, Tyree Jones, signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday in the Courtyard of Littlefield High School to continue his football career at Eastern New Mexico University.

Jones talked about what it means to him to be able to continue his athletic career at the next level, saying, “It means a lot to me. I came in this year and just played hard and wanted to get wins for this team and be a team player.”

Jones was a first-team All-District selection at defensive tackle for the Wildcats in 2019 and has also been a two-time All-District selection for the Wildcat’s basketball team.

“I think we got him into a position he could excel at this year,” Head Coach Brent Green said. “He started out having never played that position and he just evolved all season long and really became a dominant force for us towards the end of district. I’m really proud of the progress he made through his playing career here.”

The senior talked about how he’s seen himself grow over the last few years, saying, “Honestly, in the beginning of my career it didn’t seem like I could do anything, but hard work, dedication and the want to play made it better for me.”

Jones talked about what the recruiting process was like for him, saying, “It was pretty much always Eastern. What stuck out about them to me was that they seemed like family. Right from the start they were cool with me and just seem like really good people.”

Jones spoke about being a part of Wildcat football, saying, “It has been a crazy ride, but there is nothing like Wildcat football.”

Jones said that his favorite memory of being a part of Littlefield athletics has been “the process.”

“From going from nothing to being one of the best players out there,” he explained.

Coach Green talked about what kind of kid ENMU is getting, saying, “He is a great kid and a dependable kid,” the coach said. “The sky is the limit for him. He is going to continue to evolve and continue to improve as he goes.”

Jones is planing to major in Physiology and wants to enter sports medicine field after graduating.

Jones’ mom Debra Jones said that she is excited for her son and would like to see him go as far as he can go.
