MArtin Duran wins week three football contest

Week three of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest is in the books with Martin Duran taking this week’s contest with a mark of 17-3.

Ivan Estrada took second place with a record of 16-4, while Lonnie Neinast, Donna Neinast and Thomas Blackstone all tied for third with 15 points. The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of Tulsa and Northern Illinois: 73 points. Donna Neinast guessed closest to the mark with a guess of 65 points, edging out Lonnie Neinast who guessed 55 points and Blackstone, who guessed 45 points.

In the high school ranks, Littlefield throttled Post, 61-6, while Sudan blasted Ropes, 52-7, and Olton rallied past Texico, 3420. Happy took down Springlake-Earth, 64-14, while KPA 45’ed Anton, 48-0, and Shallowater took down Hereford, 55-18.

Holliday handled Idalou, 37-7, while Abernathy took down Denver City, 28-12, and Estacado fell to Palo Duro, 31-20. Muleshoe rounds out the high school slate of games with a, 39-21, victory over Friona.

In the college ranks, game 18 was a freebe because it was the wrong game. Notre Dame was upset at home by Marshall, 26-21, while Alabama survived a scare against Texas, 20-19. Texas Tech pulled out the upset over Houston in double overtime, 33-20. Kentucky knocked off Florida, 2616, while USC took care of Stanford, 41-28, and BYU knocked off Baylor, 26-20, in double overtime.

Wake Forest blasted Vanderbilt, 45-25, while Iowa State won a low scoring affair over Iowa, 10-7, and Oklahoma State took down Arizona State, 34-17.

The rest of the scores for this week are as follows: Those who finished 14-6 this week were Marcelino Garcia Jr., Oscar Sanchez, Johnny Rosemond, Tommy Cloninger, David Neinast, Devin Garcia, JR Herrell, J.C. Orozco, Marcus Garcia, Mark Grace, Richard Orozco and Alma Castillo. 13-7 finishers included Jan Smith, Gary Edwards, Terrill Moorhead, Maria Pinon, Sam Castillo, Trevor Williams and Robin Elliott, while Brenda Herrell, Dewayne Hayes, Ronnie Martin, Stevy Smith, Floyce Pierce, Charlie Smith and Larry Ashley each finished 12-8.

Teresa Dabrowski, Marcelino Castillo, Ed Dabrowski, Jonas Camacho and James Hood finished 11-9, while Jimmy Garcia finished 9-11.

In the overall standings, Duran takes over first place with 44 points, while David Neinast and Jan Smith are tied for second with 43 points and Garcia Jr., Sanchez, Rosemond and Edwards are tied for third with 42 points. Estrada, Cloninger and JR Herrell are tied for fourth with 41 points, while Lonnie Neinast, Donna Neinast, Devin Garcia, Hayes and Martin are tied for fifth with 40 points.

J.C. Orozco, Grace and Williams are tied for sixth with 39 points, while Marcus Garcia, Moorhead and Brenda Herrell are tied for seventh with 38 points. Blackston, Pinon and Stevy Smith are tied for eighth with 36 points, while Marcelino Castillo is in ninth with 35 points and Richard Orozco and Sam Castillo round out the top 10 with 34 points.
