Just past the vault doors, the office bustles with activity. Clerks assist early voters with their ballots and verify their identification.
Amidst all the activity is the new Lamb County Clerk, Rene Trevino. Working alongside her colleagues, Trevino tends to their requests to keep early voting in smooth operation.
Working as the new Lamb County Clerk since August 5 of this year, Trevino is no stranger to the building – she’s worked within the courthouse for 16 years.
“The courthouse is a family,” Trevino said. “Everybody works together. Each office has you do certain things with other offices, so it just feels more like a big family.”
Before stepping into the County Clerk position, Trevino started her time at the courthouse working in the tax office.
Then, she transitioned to the auditor’s office and moved to work at the treasurer’s office.
Trevino returned to the auditor’s office for the last time before becoming the County Clerk.
Compared to the previous responsibilities she handled, Trevino now works as a boss and oversees the duties of her colleagues – which posed initial personal concerns when offered the position, Trevino said.
“I was nervous and excited,” Trevino laughed.
Additionally, Trevino entered this new position during an election year, something Trevino said is her primary responsibility at the moment.
Despite the initial learning curve, the support and guidance she receives from her colleagues aided with her transition, Trevino said.
“ Everyone in this office – they’ve been great,” Trevino said. “They’ve been helping me because they’ve done it before, so they know what to do. They’ve been helping me step by step; I can do what needs to be done.”
Near Trevino’s desk are photos of her husband and family. Married for 25 years, the two are also parents to three boys, ages 23 years old, 20 years old and 13 years old.
Throughout the new changes Trevino faced, Trevino said her family remains endlessly supportive.
“Yes, my husband’s very supportive,” Trevino said, “though it’s a lot of late hours, especially with elections – there’s going to be a lot of times like that.”
Aside from voting, Trevino and her staff offer assistance with death and birth certificates and deeds. The office is located inside the Lamb County Courthouse in room 103.
