Three vacant houses and one structure, used for storage, in the 800 Block of East 6th Street were destroyed late Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, in a fire that began from a shed in the back yard of the house at 804 E. Sixth Street.

The only structure that served as a residence was destroyed, and only the outdoor play equipment survived the fire. The family was not at home, according to onlookers.

According to Fire Chief Grey, none of the vacant houses had utilities turned on. The fire was attributed to high

The fire was attributed to high weeds, brush and debris that caught the first house on fire, which spread to the other houses by the strong winds.

Heavy smoke filled the sky, in that area of Littlefield, as the Amherst and Littlefield fire fighters were fighting the blazes.

Fire Chief Jamie Grey reported that the fire departments were on the scene for approximately five hours. They were paged out at 5:06 p.m., and were able to have the fire under control at 10:08 p.m. Saturday.

Eight fire fighters with the Amherst Fire Department brought their water tanker truck, boom pumper truck to spray the fire, and rescue truck to assist.

Thirteen fire fighters from Littlefield were there operating two pumper trucks, a tanker truck, a brush truck, and using their skills on the ground to fight the fire. The Command vehicle was there to help with information.

Two brush fires were started by dry debris that was blown across the street by the high winds.

Fire Chief Jamie Grey expressed his appreciation to Littlefield’s EMS personnel who were on standby with two vehicles, if needed; and to law enforcement personnel who represented the Texas Department of Public Safety, a Lamb County Sheriff’s Deputy, and three Littlefield Police officers.
