Littlefield’s City Council declared an emergency in a special meeting at noon Monday, March 1, 2021, when they authorized the purchase of a compactor for the landfill.

Other city officials present were City Manager Mitch Grant; City Secretary Janine Butler; and Treasurer Andrew Eisenwine. Three staff members were also in the audience.

Mayor Eric Turpen called the meeting to order at 12 noon, then gave the invocation and led the Pledege of Allegance.

No one requested to make comment on the agenda.

When the couincil began discussions on the purchase of a compactor for the landfill, City Manager Mitch Grant explained that the compactor, which was purchased used, caught fire and burned last week at the landfill.

He presented a list of options, and after some discussion, Mayor Turpen made the motion to approve up to $250,000 for the purchase, but there was no second motion, so more discussion was done.

Mayor Turpen made a different motion to authorize City Manager $362,420 to purchase a Cat 826C compactor with Best Equipment, which can be received in two weeks, and to declare an emergency.

Council Member Michael Rangel seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously.

With no other business to be considered, Mayor Turpen adjourned the meeeting at 12:38 p.m.
