A community-wide Black History Celebration service for the Littlefield area, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, at Peace Deliverance Church, 801 LFD Drive in Littlefield.
Host pastor, John D. McCarty extends an invitation to the public to attend.
February is recognized as Black History Month, or African-American Month, and the special program is planned here, with the theme: “Continue The Work From the Past, For a New Beginning,” as related to the Scriptures in Ephesians 2:10 and Philippians 1:6.
(Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.)
(Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.)
The month is designed as a time for Americans to acknowledge and celebrate the past achievements and culture for African Americans.
Founded in 1926 as Negro History Week, by Carter G. Woodson, author, teacher and education administrator, the week became more and more popular each year.
It spread through the black schools, black social organizations, and black press.
In the 1970s, the celebration was extended through the entire month of February, becoming Black History Month, as designated by the U.S. Congress.
February was chosen because it is the birth month of both Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.
