Benefit event honors Sgt. Shawn Wilson

Area residents and law enforcement personnel turned out Sunday in large numbers to a benefit honoring Police Sgt. Shawn Wilson of the Levelland Police Department, who was critically injured during a standoff with a suspect in Levelland, on July 15, 2021.

During the standoff, one officer, SWAT leader, Sgt. Joshua Bartlett of Lubbock was fatally wounded, and three other officers were injured.

Sgt. Shawn Wilson was raised in Sudan and still resides in the community. His wife, Lauren, is also a Sudan native and currently teaches Pre-K in the Sudan Independent School District.

The Sudan Fire Dept. hosted the event Sunday, Aug. 29,2021, when approximately 350 people were served during the first hour. People continued to arrive throughout the event.

Members of the Sudan Fire Department and volunteers served hamburgers with all the trimmings to everyone who went to support Sgt. Wilson and his family. There was also a silent auction featuring baked goods, novelty items, household items, and clothing as well.

Among those attending were fellow officers of the Levelland Police Department. The Los Corrales, La Familia Motorcycle Club traveled from Lubbock representing the Lubbock, Levelland, and Ransom Canyon Police Departments. The group is comprised of law enforcement personnel and supporters of area law enforcement.

These officers had served with Sgt. Shawn Wilson, and are longtime friends. They presented Sgt. Wilson with a generous donation.

Mike Hill of the Sudan Fire Department was pleased to report that the benefit donations that came from approximately 500 supporters, exceeded their expectations.

When offered the oppportunity to make a statement, Sgt. Wilson said: “The support my family has received has meant everything to me. I’ve received so much support from the region. I know I wouldn’t be recovering as fast as I am, without the support and prayers. I want to thank everyone.”
