The Lamb County Junior Livestock Show for Lamb County’s 4H and FFA youths, will begin Thursday, Jan. 5, in the Lamb County Ag and Community Center in Littlefield.

Youths from 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters in Littlefield, Amherst, Sudan, Springlake-Earth, and Olton communities will be bringing their steers, heifers, lambs, goats and swine to exhibit during the show.

Action will begin at 9 a.m.

Wednesday morning, Jan. 4, when show officials meet to set up the show ring and finalize the entries.

At 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Jan. 5, livestock from all five Lamb County communities may begin moving into the barn, after stall, chute and pen assignments have been posted by the division superintendents.

All animals must be in place in the show barn by 4:30 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 6.

At 5 p.m. Friday, Steers will be weighed by superintendents, and Heifer papers will be checked.

At 6 p.m. Friday, weight cards for lambs, goats, and swine must be turned in to the superintendents.

Judging of market goats will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, Jan. 7.

When that show is complete, judging of market lambs, market swine, beef heifers, market steers, and dairy heifers will be done.

Showmanship’s for each animal category will be judged during the respective shows.

Advisors to youths Advisors to the youngsters for their FFA projects have been Alan Been, Earth- Springlake FFA; Tyler Classen, Littlefield FFA; Johnny Brock, Amherst FFA; Gale Long and Kikki Smith, Olton FFA; and Ken Carr, Sudan FFA.

Brandon Albus, Lamb County Extension Agent, is advisor to the 4-H members.

Animal Superintendents

Superintendents for the different animal divisions are: Lee Ray of Sudan, lamb and goat superintendent; with Dakota Lewis of Olton serving as the assistant superintendent.

Dakota Lewis of Olton, will also serve as the steer and heifer superintendent; with Gary Bigham of Sudan the assistant superintendent.

Graham Henley of Littlefield, is the swine superintendent; with Casey Hardin of Amherst the assistant superintendent.

John Van de Pol of Littlefield, is the dairy superintendent.

Show Judges

Austin Voyles will be judging the goats, lambs, swine, steers, and breeding beef heifers.

Judge of the dairy heifers will be Randy Carpenter.

Show Officers and Directors

Gary Bigham of Sudan is president of the 2023 Lamb County Junior Livestock Show; and Lee Ray of Sudan is serving again as secretary-treasurer.

Other directors are Dakota Lewis, of Springlake- Earth; Casey Hardin, of Amherst; Graham Henley and John Van de Pol, both of Littlefield.

Exhibitor qualifications

All 4-H and FFA exhibitors must be enrolled in a school in Lamb County, or is home schooled, and must be validated in Lamb County to be eligible to participate in the Lamb County Junior Livestock Show.

The 4-H minimum age standard of being at least 9 years old, or 8 years old and in the third grade, will be adhered to.

All exhibitors must be academically eligible, and there will be a “no pass, no show” policy for each exhibitor. The animal can not be shown by a substitute exhibitor, if the exhibitor is ineligible.

Each exhibitor must show his or her own animal, and be responsible for its care and cleanliness of the stall and pen. Any person eligible to show, may assist an exhibitor who has more than one animal in a class.

Only exhibitors, show officials and judges will be allowed in the judging ring during the time of judging.

Grand, Reserve Grand Champs

All first-place winners of each breed will compete for breed champion, and all breed champs will compete for the Grand Championship. The second-place to the Grand Champion will compete for the Reserve Grand Championship award. All breed champs and reserve breed champs will receive rosettes, while the grand and reserve grand champs will receive buckles. Ribbons will be awarded to first through fifth-place animals, and after that, participation ribbons will be awarded.

Littlefield Area Show and Sale

The Littlefield Area Junior Livestock Show and Sale will be conducted for youths from Littlefield, Amherst and Sudan, from Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023 through Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14, when the premium auction sale is conducted.

Olton Junior Livestock Show

The Olton Junior Livestock Show and Sale will be held Friday, Jan. 20, 2023 through Saturday, Jan. 21.

Earth-Springlake Show The Earth-Springlake Junior Livestock Show is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023 through Saturday, Jan. 28.
