Wolverines take down Dimmitt JV, 13-4

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team won their season-opener over Dimmitt JV on Thursday in their Tournament-opener of the Shorty Barlow Classic.

With the win, the Wolverines imrpove to 1-0 on the season.

Evan DeLeon drew a lead-off walk for the Wolverines and Trace Goodman hit a grounder to shortstop, as DeLeon broke for second on the pitch. Both runners were safe on the play. Jalen Solis hit a two-RBI triple to the left-center field fence to put the Wolverines up, 2-0.

Davey Crandall hit a sacrifice grounder to first, as Solis came across to score to extend their lead to, 3-0, with one out Xavyer Mosqueda drew a walk and Josh Samaron singled to right field, before Alex Alvarez drew a walk to load the bases for Springlake-Earth

Slade Beerwinkle singled on an error to third base and a bad throw to first allowed Mosqueda and Samaron to score, pushing their lead out to, 5-0. Beerwinkle took second on the pitch, before Gavin Gonzales drew a walk, putting runners on first and second for the Wolverines.

DeLeon ripped a two-RBI double to the left field fence, stretching the lead to, 7-0, and Goodman drew awalk to load the bases again for the Wolverines.

Dimmitt made a pitching change, as Solis hit an RBI single to right field, making the score, 8-0. Crandall and Mosqueda drew back-to-back walks to extend the lead to, 10-0, before Samaron struck out swinging for out numbertwo.

Alvarez hit a two-RBI single to left-center field to push the lead to, 12-0, but Mosqueda was picked off at second base by the pitcher to retire the side.

Crandall started on the mound for the Wolverines and got Dimmitt’s lead-off man to strike out swinging for out number one. Alvarez caught a fly ball in left field for out number two and Crandall got the next batter to strike out looking to end the inning, as the Bobcats went down in order.

Beerwinkle and Gonzales struck out to begin the top of the second inning for Springlake-Earth, but DeLeon singled through the left side and Goodman drew a walkto put two runners on for the Wolverines.

Solis hit a shot back at the pitcher and the throw to first was dropped, loading the bases for Springlake-Earth. Crandall drew an RBI-walk to make the score, 13-0, but Mosqueda struck out looking to end the inning.

In the bottom half of the second inning, Crandall walked the bases loaded and a run scored on a past ball before the fourth batter of the inning drew a walk to re-load the bases, with the score trimmed to, 13-1. Crandall earned a strikeout for out number one before another run scored on a past ball to make the score, 13-2. The Bobcats hit a two-RBI double to cut the lead to, 13-4, as Crandall was relieved

Goodman picked off a runner trying to steal second for out number two and Samaron got the batter to strike out looking to end the inning.

The Wolverine bats fell silent in the top of the third., as they went down in order.

In the bottom half ofthe side, Solis fielded a grounder and fired it to first for out number one. Samaron gave up a walk, but a pick-off moved to first by Samaron caught the runner in a rundown, where he was tagged out at second by Solis for out number two.

Samaron would give up a hit and a walk before striking out the final batter to end the game, with the Wolverines taking the contest 13-4.

Crandall pitched 1.1 innings giving up four walks and four runs, while earning three strikeouts. Samaron closed out the game pitching the final 1.2 innings earning two strikeouts, while giving up two walks.
