The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity basketball teams season came to an end on Friday when they fell to the #4 Texline Tornadoes, 84-51, in the 1A Regional Quarterfinal at Randall High School.
With the loss, the Wolverines close the season with a mark of 16-5 overall on the season.
Stratton Potter opened the contest with a three from the top of the key, but on the other end, junior, Trace Goodman, knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, off of the assist from junior, Kaden Castillo, trimming the lead to, 3-2. Junior guard, Evan DeLeon followed it up with a take to the basket for a lay-up, drawing an andone foul on the play. He converted the free throw to give the Wolverines their first lead of the game, 5-3.
Texline took a time out with 5:51 remaining in the opening quarter, and out of the break, Angel Herrera dropped in a lay-up to tie the game, 5-5. The Wolverines would respond, as junior forward, Keshan Holmes handed the ball off to DeLeon, who drove to the basket off of the screen by Holmes and dropped in a lay-up to make the score, 7-5. Noel Lozano would tie the game with a lay-up on the other end, but Holmes answered with a jumper from the left elbow to put the Wolverines back in front, 9-7.
With 4:26 remaining in the first quarter, Dereck Rosales dropped in a put-back off of a miss by DeLeon to stretch their lead to, 11-7. Lozano was fouled on an attempt by Castillo and he split the free throws to trim the lead to, 11-8. Lozano dropped in a lay-up on the next play, off of the inbound pass from Colton Luthor, making it a one-point game, 11-10.
With 3:15 remaining in the guar-ter, Lozano scored a put-back off of a miss by Potter and William Luthor followed it uo with a layup off of an assist from Elias Espino to put the Tornadoes back in front, 14-11. With 1:42 remaining in the first quarter, Lozano was blocked by Castillo on his intial attempt, but was abel to gather the loose ball and put in for a lay-up to extend their lead to, 16-11.
Castillo answered with a fadeaway jumper from the left wing, but with under one minute to play, Lozano dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Herrera, making the score, 16-13. With time winding down in the quarter, Espino buried a three form the left elbow off of the assist from William Luthor, making the score, 21-13, as the first quarter came to a close.
Lozano dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Espino to open the second quarter, but on the other end, DeLeon drew back-toback fouls on William Luthor and went three-for-four from the freethrow line trimming the lead to, 23-16. Espino drained a three from the left corner, off of an assist from Herrera and Colton Luthor followed it up with a corner three from the left side to extend the Texline lead to, 29-16.
Springlake-Earth took a time out with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter, and out of the break, Potter dropped in a floater from the right elbow, off of the assist from Lozano, making the score, 31-16. With 4:19 remaining in the half, Espino drove the left baseline for a lay-up, but Holmes answered with a spin to the basket for a layup on the other end to trim the lead to, 33-18.
Texline took a time out with 3:30 remaining in the half, and out of the break, Espino drained a three from the left corner and followed it up with a three from the left el-bow to push their lead out to, 39-18, as Springlake-Earth was forced to take another time out with 1:58 remaining in the half. Out of the break, Rosales knocked down a short jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Goodman making the score, 39-20.
Texline dropped in another bucket, to extend the lead to, 41-20, and with time winding down in the half, Holmes drove to the basket, dumping the ball off to Rosales for a lay-up to close out the first half with the Tornadoes out in front, 41-22, going into the locker room at halftime.
DeLeon was fouled on an attempt by William Luthor to open the second half; he split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 41-23. With just over seven minutes to play in the third quarter, Herrera dropped in a lay-up in the paint and William Luthor drove the lane and kicked it to Lozano for a layup to push their lead to, 45-23. William Luthor buried a three from the right elbow and was fouled on their next possession by Goodman; he split the free throws making the score, 49-23.
With 4:15 remaining in the quarter, Alex Alvarez dropped in a layup, off of an assist from DeLeon, but William Luthor drove the right baseline for a lay-up to make the score, 51-25. Castillo answered with a three from the top of the key, but Espino came right back for Texline with a pull-up jumper in the lane, stretching their lead to, 55-28.
With 2:39 remaining in the quarter, William Luthor knocked down a jumper from the left wing, but DeLeon answered with a three from the top of the key, making the score, 55-31. Lozano scored a put-back off of a miss by Espino and Espino followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from William Luthor, making the score, 60-31.
With time winding down in the quarter, Castillo dropped in a layup to close out the quarter, trimming the lead to, 60-33, heading into the fmal quarter of play.
Colton Luthor was fouled on an attempt by Holmes to open the fourth quarter; he split the free throws and William Luthor hit Lozano on the next play for a layup to make the score, 63-33. With 5:59 remaining in the game, William sent a long inbound pass to Lozano, who dropped in an easy lay-up to make the score, 65-33, as Springlake-Earth took a time out with 5:57 remaining in the contest.
Out of the break, Colton Luthor was fouled on an attempt by Holmes and he split the free throws to extend their lead to, 67-33. With 5:30 remaining, William Luthor dropped in a put-back, drawing an and-one foul on Castillo. He missed the free throw leaving the score, 68-33.
Potter dropped in a floater from the right side, but on the other end, DeLeon dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on William Luthor, who picked up his fourth foul of the game. DeLeon converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 70-36.
DeLeon picked up a steal in the halfcourt, but a hustle play by Colton Luthor forced a miss on the lay-up try, however, Goodman was there for a put-back to make the score, 70-38. With just under four minutes to play in the game, Lozano was fouled on the floor by Alvarez, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He split the attempts, making the score, 71-38.
DeLeon buried a deep three from the left elbow, but the Tornadoes answered, as Lozano dropped in a put-back to make the score, 73-41. DeLeon came right back with a lay-up for the Wolverines, but Lozano again answered with a lay-up on the other end, making the score, 75-43.
Texline took a time out with 3:05 left to play in the game, and out of the break, Lozano drew a blocking foul on Timothy Tanaro. He split the free throws, pushing their lead out to, 76-43. With 2:29 left to play in the game, DeLeon was fouled on a three-point attempt by Herrera. He converted all three free throws to trim the lead to, 76-46.
Espino knocked down a turnaround jumper from the left wing, but Tanaro answered with a layup and DeLeon followed it up with a three from the right elbow, making the score, 78-51. Texline went on to close out the game on a, 6-0 scoring run to take the contest, 84-51.
DeLeon led the Wolverines in scoring with 26 points, while Castillo chipped in seven points and Rosales tallied six points. Holmes and Goodman each contributed four points, while Alvarez and Tanaro each finished with two points.
