The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team won their home match-up against the Andrews Mustangs on Monday night, 61-35.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-0 overall on the season.
Senior, Tyree Jones, won the tipoff, as the Wildcats took possession. Senior, Chris Brown, opened the scoring for Littlefield with a lay-up off of the assist from senior, Jeremiah Salazar. But, Andrews answered, as Manuel Rojo dropped in a floater drawing an and-one foul on junior, Jordan Trevino. The free throw was no good, leaving the score tied, 2-2, with 7:31 to play in the opening quarter.
On the other end, Jordan Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Rojo. He made the first and missed the second, but Brown was there for the offensive rebound and drew another foul on Rojo, earning a trip to the line. He split the free throws, extending their lead to, 4-2.
Brown followed it up with a layup off of the assist from Jordan Trevino, Hernandez picked up a steal from junior, Ethan Garcia, and got it ahead to Anthony Trevino on the fast-break for the lay-up to cut the Littlefield lead to, 6-4, with 6:16 to play in the first quarter.
Anthony Trevino knocked down a short jumper from the right side to tie the game, and Andre Villegas followed it up with a corner three from the right side to give the Mustangs their first lead of the game, 9-6. With four minutes to play in the quarter, Jones knocked down a short fade-away jumper from the right baseline off of the assist from Brown to make it a onepoint game, 9-8.
Garcia took a charge on Hernandez and the Wildcats capitalized on their next possession, as Salazar used a euro-step to get to the basket for a lay-up, regaining the lead for Littlefield, 10-9. Hernandez quickly responded for Andrews to give them the lead, 11-10, as Littlefield Head Coach Rob Ogle called for a time out to talk things over with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter.
Out of the break, Jones took the pass from Brown strong to the basket for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Villegas. He converted the free throw to make the score, 13-11. Anthony Trevino took a charge on Salazar and Villegas buried a three from the right elbow to give the Mustangs the lead, 14-13, as the first quarter came to a close.
Junior, Jaron Cabello, found Brown for a lay-up to open the second quarter and Cabello followed it up with a three from the right wing to give the Wildcats a four-point lead, 18-14. Cabello came down awkward on the shot and had to leave the game with 6:32 remaining in the half.
With just over six minutes to play in the second quarter, Jordan Trevino drove to the basket and dumped it off to Brown for the Lay-up, extending their lead to, 20-14. Brown hit Jones for a lay-up and on the next play, Jones picked up a steal and went coast-to-coast, dropping in the lay-up to push the Littlefield lead to, 24-14, with 4:18 to play in the quarter.
Jones was fouled on a threepoint attempt by Anthony Trevino; he made two-out-ofthree at the line to stretch the lead to, 26-14, with 3:49 remaining in the half. Villegas took a charge on Jordan Trevino and on the next play, Hernandez drew a foul on senior, Caden Longoria, earning a trip to the line. Andrews took a time out and out of the break, he made both free throws to cut the lead to, 26-16.
Littlefield took a time out with 3:01 to play in the half, and out of the break Longoria knocked down a short jumper from the right side off of the assist from Brown. Jones drove the baseline on the next play, kicking it out to Garcia at the top of the key, as he buried a three to push their lead out to, 31-16, with 1:50 to play in the half.
Rojo was fouled on an attempt by senior, Juan Rios; he made both free throws and Raleigh Clark followed it up with a put-back on their next possession to cut the lead to, 31-20, heading into the locker room at halftime.
Hernandez hit Villegas in transition for a lay-up to open the third quarter, but on the other end, Jones hit Brown with a no-look pass for a lay-up, as he drew an and-one foul on Luis Cervantes. The free throw was good extending the Littlefield lead to, 34-22.
Salazar drew a chaise on Villegas on the defensive end and then followed it up with a take to the basket for a lay-up to make the score, 36-22. The Wildcats had some nice ball movement on their next pos-session, as Salazar passed it to Jordan Trevino, who threw it into Brown, who dropped in a lay-up from the left side, making the score, 38-22, with 5:26 to play in the quarter.
Hernandez dropped in a lay-up off of a steal, but Jordan Trevino drove the lane on the other end and kicked it to Brown for the layup, stretching the lead to, 40-24. Salazar followed it up with a drive to the basket for a lay-up, but with time winding down in the quarter, Anthony Trevino drained a three from the right elbow off of the inbound pass from Rojo, making the score, 42-27, as the third quarter came to a close.
Jones drove through the lane and threw down a one-hand slam on the Mustangs’ defense to open the final quarter of play and on their next possession, Salazar lobbed up an ally-oop pass to Jones, who fmished the play with a lay-up, making the score, 45-27. Salazar scored a fast-break lay-up off of a steal, as Andrews called for a time out to talk things over with 6:14 to play in the game.
Out of the break, Jordan drove to the basket for a lay-up and on the following possession senior, Joseph Salinas, was fouled on an attempt by Clark. He converted both free throws to push their lead out to, 52-27.
With 4:43 remaining, Hemandez was fouled on an attempt by Jordan Trevino; he split the free throws and Anthony Trevino followed it up with a lay-up in transition for the Mustangs, making the score, 52-30.
With just over four minutes remaining, Jones was fouled on an attempt by Villegas, who picked up his fourth foul. Jones made the first and missed the second, but after two offensive rebounds by Brown, he was able to drop in the put-back, extending their lead to, 55-30.
Salazar split a pair of free throws after being fouled by Clark and Jones followed it up with a three from the left elbow making the score, 59-30, with 2:36 to play. Longoria knocked down a short, bank jumper from the left side, but on the other end, Villegas dropped in a lay-up from the left side and knocked down a three from the left wing in the closing seconds, as Littlefield took the contest, 61-35.
Jones led the team in scoring with 19 points and was joined in double-figures scoring by Brown, who finished with 18 points. Salazar netted seven points, while Longoria and Salinas each added four points and Trevino, Garcia and Cabello each finished with three points.
The Wildcats were at Monahans on Tuesday to take on the Loboes. They will be at Idalou on Tuesday to take on the Wildcats.
Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
