WILDCATS TAKE DOWN CHIEFTAINS, 48-24

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team made it back-to-back district wins on Tuesday, as they took down the Friona Chieftains at Wildcat Gym, 48-24.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 10-6 overall, 3-1 in district play.

Senior forward, Tyree Jones, scored a put-back off of the miss by junior, Jordan Trevino to open the contest for Littlefield and Trevino followed it up with a jumper in the lane off of the assist from senior point guard, Jeremiah Salazar, making the score, 4-0, to begin the contest.

With 5:36 remaining in the opening quarter, Jones was fouled on an attempt by David Martinez. He missed both of the initial free throws, but a lane violation was called on Friona, allowing Jones a third shot. He converted the extra free throw, extending their lead to, 5-0.

Bryan Chavira hit Jacob Bautista in transition for a layup, but on the other end, senior forward, Chris Brown, hit Jones for a lay-up, to extend their lead to, 7-2. Friona answered, as Jared Rejino knocked down a jumper from the left wing, but the Wildcats responded again, as Brown dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Salazar, drawing an and-one foul on Martinez. He converted the free throw, pushing their lead out to, 10-4.

With 2:47 remaining in the quarter, Kaden Jeter took a charge on Jones, but the Wildcats answered with a three from the right elbow by senior, Joseph Salinas, off of the assist from Salazar, making the score, 13-4. Junior, Ryan West, took a charge on Chavira, but on the next trip down for Friona, Andrew Husted knocked down a short jumper from the left wing, trimming the lead to, 13-6.

But, with time winding down in the quarter, senior, Caden Longoria, buried a three from the right elbow off of the assist from West to make the score, 16-6, as the first quarter came to a close.

Jones opened the second quarter with a lay-up off of the assist from Trevino and Brown followed it up with a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Trevino, pushing their lead out to, 20-6. With 4:36 left to play in the half, Jones was fouled on the floor by Andrew Rivera, earning a trip to the line. He made oneout-of-two at the free-throw line, stretching the lead to, 22-7.

Jones dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Brown, forcing the Chieftains to take a time out with 1:28 remaining in the half. Out of the break, a save by Trevino was picked up by Salazar, who drove the left baseline and dropped in a floater, drawing an and-one foul on Jared Rejino. He missed the free throw, but West was able to grab the offensive rebound, which led to Brown being fouled on a shot attempt by Bautista. He split the free throws, making the score, 27-7, with under one minute to play in the half.

With time winding down in the half, junior, Jaron Cabello, buried a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Salazar, making the score, 30-7, going into the locker room at halftime.

Jones picked up a steal to open the third quarter, taking it the other way for a breakaway slam dunk to ignite the crowd, stretching the Littlefield lead to, 32-7. Friona answered, as Bautista dropped in a lay-up, but on the other end Brown was fouled on an attempt by Rivera. He split the free throws stretching their lead to, 33-9, with just over six minutes remaining in the third

Jared Rejino knocked down a three from the left elbow for Friona off of the assist from Martinez and followed it up with another three from the left elbow, cutting the lead to, 33-15. Brown scored a put-back off of the miss by senior guard, Joseph Salinas, but Friona responded, as Chavira drove the baseline for a reverse lay-up, trimming the lead to, 35-17, with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter.

Cabello answered for Littlefield with a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Salazar and Brown took a charge on the other end on Husted, regaining possession for Littlefield. Cabello was fouled on a three-point attempt by Jared Rejino and converted two-out-of-three shots at the line, making the score, 40-17, as the third quarter came to a close.

Trevino drove the lane and dumped the ball off to Jones for a soft slam dunk to open the fourth quarter, but the Chieftains answered with a three to make the score, 42-20. With 4:35 remaining, Bautista scored a lay-up in transition, but on the other end, junior, Ethan Garcia, was fouled on an attempt by Jared Rejino, earning a trip to the line. Garcia split the free-throw attempts, but the Chieftains answered, as J.L. Saucedo knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line to make the score, 43-24.

With 2:45 left to play, Jones went coast-to-coast finishing the play with a slam on the offensive end to fire up the student section, as they stretched the lead to, 45-22. Senior, Cade Doty, drained a three from the top of the key and Saucedo drove the lane for a lay-up on the other end, but the Wildcats took down the Chieftains in their first meeting of the season, 48-24.

Jones led the team in scoring with 17 points, while Brown chipped in nine point and Cabelleo tallied eight points. Doty and Salinas each finished with three points, while Salazar and Trevino each added two points and Garcia finished with one point in the contest.

The Wildcats were at Lamesa on Friday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against the Muleshoe Mules.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
