WILDCATS ROUGH UP ROUGHNECKS, 65-22

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team won a non-district match-up at home over the Sundown Roughnecks, 65-22.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 8-5 overall on the season.

Littlefield senior forward, Tyree Jones, dropped in a put-back off of the miss by junior, Ethan Garcia, to open the contest, but Sundown answered quickly, as Johnny Acevedo buried a three from the right elbow to give Sundown the lead, 3-2.

Jones answered with a lay-up off of the assist from junior, Jordan Trevino, but the Roughnecks came right back, as Alex Bocanegra dropped in a lay-up to put the Roughnecks back in front, 5-4, with 5:31 remaining in the opening quarter.

Senior forward, Chris Brown, dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Jones and Jones dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Trevino to give the Wildcats a three-point lead, 8-5. The Roughnecks kept themselves in the game, as Acevedo knocked down a jumper from the right elbow and Noah Peralez buried a three from the right wing, putting Sundown back in front, 10-8, with 1:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Brown Banked in a three from the left elbow for Littlefield and on the following play, senior guard, Jeremiah Salazar, was fouled on an attempt by Carson Boggs. He made one-of-two shots at the line, making it a two-point game, 12-10, as the first quarter came to a close.

Jones opened the second quarter with a steal, which he took the other way for a breakaway slam that ignited the crowd at Wildcat Gym. Brown followed it up with a bucket and Trevino kept the run going with a floater in the lane, as he drew an and-one foul on Bocanegra. He converted the free throw to stretch their lead to, 19-10, with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

Boggs knocked down a three from the left elbow to end the scoring drought for Sundown, but Jones, on the other end, drove the lane and kicked it to Brown for the lay-up, making the score, 21-13. With just under four minutes remaining in the half, Jones took the inbound from the sideline and drove through the lane, finishing the play with a one-handed slam that again ignited the Littlefield crowd, as their lead was extended to, 23-13.

Jones knocked down a short jumper off of the inbound pass from Salazar and with under one minute to play in the half, senior guard, Juan Rios, hit junior, Jaron Cabello, with outlet pass, as he finished the play with a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 27-13.

Acevedo banked in a three from the right elbow, but in the closing seconds, Jones knocked down a long two-pointer from the right elbow to make the score, 29-16, going into the locker room at halftime.

Jones opened the second half with a drive to the basket for a layup and Garcia followed it up with a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Brown, making the score, 34-16. Brown drained another three for the Wildcats, but Boggs, on the other end, dropped in a bucket, drawing an and-one foul on Garcia. The free throw was no good leaving the score, 37-18, with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter.

The Wildcats barrage of three’s continued as Rios buried one from the left wing off of the assist from Salazar, extending their lead to, 40-18. Jones dropped in a bucket, as Sundown Head Coach Kyle Igo took a time out to try and slow down Littlefield’s momentum.

Out of the break, Cade Doty, buried a three from the left elbow, but in the closing seconds of the quarter, Boggs drew a blocking foul on senior, Joseph Salinas earning a trip to the line. He converted both free throws, trimming the lead to, 45-20, as the third quarter came to a close.

Jones opened the fourth quarter with a tip in off of a miss by Rios and Brown followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Trevino, making the score, 49-20. Acevedo drove the right side for a lay-up to get Sundown on the board in the fourth quarter, but Littlefield answered, as Trevino hit Rios on a backdoor cut for a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 51-22.

Jones drove the right side for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Brandon Kenley. Jones converted the free throw, pushing their lead to, 54-22. Brown split a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Boggs, and the Roughnecks took a time out with 3:55 to play in the game.

Out of the break, junior, Ryan West, took a charge on Boggs, who picked up his fourth foul of the game. The Wildcat were able to capitalize on the turnover, as Salinas drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Cabello, making the score, 58-22.

Junior, Ty’Jae Chambers, dropped in a lay-up and Trevino drained a deep three from the right elbow off of the assist from Doty, stretching their lead to, 63-22. With under one minute remaining, West took another charge on Boggs, who fouled out of the contest and Chambers dropped in a lay-up to close out the game for the Wildcats, who took the contest over Sundown, 65-22.

Jones led the team in scoring with 21 points and was joined in double-figures scoring by Brown, who netted 15 points. Trevino tallied six points, while Salinas and Rios each finished with five points in the contest.

Chambers chipped in four points, while Garcia and Doty each added three points and Cabello finished with two points. Salazar also had one-point in the contest.

The Wildcats resume district play on Tuesday with a road game against the Dimmitt Bobcats.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
