The Littlefield Wildcats scrimmaged the Snyder Tigers at Wildcat Stadium last week, as they looked to fine tune things for the season-opener this Friday with the Dimmitt Bobcats.
Head Coach Brent Green have his assessment of his team in the scrimmage, saying, “I thought it was an overall team effort. Anytime we have success it is because we have 11 people out there doing their job and I think that was the result of what you saw Thursday night.”
“Defensively, I thought we started out pretty passive defensively, but after the first four or five plays, I thought our kids settled in and really shut them out from there,” he said. “We had some kids flying around and making plays. Obviously, we have some technique things to fix, and we continue to work on those daily and trying to get as good as we can.
He added, “Offensively, I thought we mixed in our spread stuff with our slot stuff pretty good, but we have to get better at executing, our execution is not where we want it yet. We are still shuffling some kids around in certain spots and that is some of it, but as we move forward we will get that worked out and will be better.”
Dimmitt comes to town this week, running the Flexbone offensively and a 5-3 stack defensively.
“It makes you change speeds on everything that you have done up to this point because we haven’t really just concentrated on their offensive attack like they will give it to us, up to this point,” he explained. “It is assignment football. When they run their option stuff we have someone responsible for the dive, someone responsible for the quarterback and someone responsible for the pitch. So, it is just a lot of teaching and learning this week, but it is a good thing, because it is different from week-to-week.”
He added, “Defensively, they throw a 5-3 stack at us, which we have worked against a little bit in two-a-days, so that isn’t completely brand new. But, you also throw in the different blitzes that they can show you on the stack and moving the front around just a little bit changes all of our blocking schemes. We’ve had our hands full and have had a lot to work on this week.”
Green said that “Execution” is going to be key in getting a victory this week.
“We need to really start clicking offensively and executing all of our plays no matter what pack age is in the game. Defensively, we just have to have a bunch of kids flying around and playing technique and making plays.
Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium in Littlefield.
