The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity baseball team swept the season series with Denver City on Saturday with a, 14-1, victory behind a one-hitter from senior pitcher, Chris Brown.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 14-6 overall, 5-0 in district play.
Jordan Trevino drew a lead-off walk in the top of the first inning, but Blake Green struck out looking for the first out of the inning. Ethan Hackler was walked to put runners on first and second for the Wildcats, but Brown and Gus McNabb both struck out looking to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the side, Brown got RJ Hurtado to fly out to Turner Heffington in left-center field for out number one, before Erlan Lozano walked and Uriel Rodriguez followed it up with an RBI-double down the third-base line to put the Mustangs up, 1-0. Brown recovered and got Eric Estrada to strike out swinging for out number two. Sebastian Perez drew a walk, but Jose Nunez grounded out to Trevino at shortstop to end the inning.
Ethan Garcia singled to right field to lead off the second inning and Jonavan Weaver hit a sacrifice shot over the pitcher, but was thrown out at first by the shortstop, Lozano, for out number one. Heffington drew a walk and Jaron Cabello singled up the middle to load the bases.
Trevino and Green drew back-to-back RBI walks to take the lead, 2-1, for Littlefield and Hackler hit a sacrifice grounder to Lozano at shortstop, who got the out at first, as Cabello scored and the runners moved up 90- feet, making the score, 3-1. Brown drew a walk to load the bases, as Joseph Salinas came on as the courtesy runner. McNabb was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, as Caden Longoria came on as the courtesy runner, pushing their lead to, 4-1.
Perez relieved David Escobar on the mound, as he got Garcia to fly out to right field to retire the side.
Brown got the lead-off man, Escobar to strike out swinging for out number one in the bottom half of the inning. He gave up a walk to Taylor Sellers, before getting Ernesto Martinez to fly out to Cabello in right field. Hurtado struck out swinging and was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike to end the inning.
Weaver singled through the left side to begin the top of the third inning and Heffington singled on an error by Escobar at third. Cabello popped up to Estrada behind first base for out number one, but Trevino singled to left field and Green followed it up with a grand slam to left-center field to bust the game open, making the score, 8-1.
Hackler popped up to Mario Sanchez behind the plate and Brown grounded out to Lozano at shortstop to retire the side.
Brown got the Mustangs to go three-up-and-three-down in the bottom of the third inning, and the Wildcat offense went back to work in the top of the fourth.
McNabb singled to right field, as Longoria came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher. Garcia singled on an error by Estrada at second base and Weaver hit an RBI-single to center field that moved Garcia over to third, as they extended their lead to, 9-1.
Heffington struck out looking for out number one, but Garcia scored on a past ball to make the score, 10-1. Cabello roped an RBIdouble to left field to push their lead to, 11-1, as Estrada relieved Perez on the mound for Denver City.
Trevino drew a walk, but Green hit into a fielder’s choice to Escobar at third, who got the force out at third for out number two. Hackler drew a walk to load the bases and Brown and McNabb drew RBI-walks to extend their lead to, 13-1. Sellers relieved Estrada on the mound for the Mustangs, as he gave up an RBI-walk to Garcia to push the lead to, 14-1, before Weaver grounded into a fielder’s choice to Escobar at third to end the inning.
Brown and the Wildcat defense shutout the Mustangs in the final two innings, as they took down Denver City, 14-1, on the road. Brown pitched a complete game, earning four strikeouts, while giving up five walks and one run.
The Wildcats had a break from district play on Tuesday when they hosted Trinity Christian. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Saturday with a home game against Muleshoe.
