Sudan set to open district play against Bovina Mustangs

The Sudan Hornets varsity football team cruised to a,46-14, Homecoming victory on Friday over the Plains Cowboys. This week they open district play on the road against the Bovina Mustangs.

“I felt our guys really played well the entire game,” Head Coach John Cornelius said. “We had two touchdowns called back in the first half. The production was there throughout the game; we just need to clean up the mistakes.”

He added, “On their last touch down, we were able to play some of our younger players. Defensively, we flew to the ball well and were able to create some turnovers. We would still like to see more production in our passing game offensively.”

Coach Cornelius talked about the upcoming match-up with the Mustangs, saying, “Bovina is a really good ball club who has played a very tough schedule. The game is a natural rivalry, so we need to be ready to match their energy and intensity. We feel like the schedule we played this year has set us up for success in district play.”

He added, “Again offensively, we are getting really good production in the run game. Our offensive line is really starting to jell. We need to be able to hit a few of the shots downfield in the passing game. On defense, we have to contain Cole Emery, their quarterback. He is elusive and is good at buying time and distributing the ball to their other skill kids.”

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Mustang Stadium in Bovina.
