NETTES OUTLAST ROPES, 64-60, IN REGIONAL QUARTERFINAL

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team won a thriller over the Ropes Lady Eagles on Thursday, 64-60, at Levelland High School to claim the 2A Region I RegionalChampionship.

With the win, the Nettes improve to 17-12 overall on the season.

Junior, Addison Boehning, dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Rylan Garcia. She converted the free throw to put the Nettes in front, 3-0, and after a pair of missed free throws by Tatum Melton, junior, Liz Sital, hit sophomore, Stevi Lockhart, on a back-door cut, as she drew a foul on the shot on Brooklyn Belyeu. She converted both free throws to make the score, 5-0, with 6:31 remaining in the opening quarter.

Boehning was fouled on an attempt by Bethani Bearden; she sank both free throws to make it a, 7-0, scoring run, before Maggie Anderson dropped in a put-back off of her own miss, drawing an and-one foul on sophomore, Gracyn Shultz. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 7-2.

With 5:12 remaining in the first quarter, sophomore, Braelyn Pointer, knocked dfowna jumper from the right baseline, but Aubrey Bandy answered with a jumper on the other end to make the score, 9-4. Pointer came right back with a jumper to push their lead back out to, 11-4.

Ropes took a time out with 4:51 remaining in the quarter, and out of the break, Bearden drained a three from the left corner to cut the lead to, 11-7. Anderson dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Bearden , but Sudan answered with back-to-back buckets to stretch their lead back out to, 15-9. Sital followed it up with a jumper from the right elbow, but Anderson answered with a lay-up of her own for Ropes, making the score, 17-11.

With 1:12 remaining in the quarter, Lockhart was fouled on an attempt by Melton. She made both attempts at the line, but a lane violation was called on the second shot, leaving the score, 18-11. Anderson hit Belyeu on a backdoor cut for a lay-up to close out the quarter with the Nettes out in front, 18-13.

Anderson opened the second quarter with a lay-up off of an assist from Melton and Melton followed it up with a lay-up off of an assist from Anderson to make it a one-point game, 18-17. Lockhart drove the right baseline for a layup, drawing an and-one foul Garcia. She converted the free throw pushing their lead back out to, 21-17.

Boehning dropped in a lay-up and Pointer took a charge on Melton, before Boehning knocked down a short jumper off of the outlet pass from Lockhart, stretching their lead back out to, 25-17. With 4:29 remaining, Sital hit Boehning on a fast-break for a layup, forcing Ropes to take a time out with 4:28 to play in the first half.

Out of the break, Bandy dropped in a lay-up, but Lockhart answered with a runner from the left side to make it a 10-point game, 29-19. Gracyn Shultz dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Lockhart, but Bandy answered with a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Pointer. She converted the free throw and Anderson followed it up with a lay-up off of an assist from Bearden, making the score, 31-24.

With under one minute to play in the half, Anderson dropped in a put-back and Bandy dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Bearden to close out the first half, making the score, 31-28, with the Nettes out in front.

Anderson scored a put-back to open the second half, but Pointer answered with a three from the top of the key and Lockhart was fouled on a three-point attempt by Melton. She made two-out-ofthree at the line to extend their lead back out to, 36-30. Belyeu grabbed an offensive rebound and got it to Bandy, who dropped in a lay-up to make it a four-point Sudan lead, 36-32.

With 5:42 to play in the third quarter, Anderson spun to the basket for a lay-up on the right side, but Boehning answered with a jumper in the lane off of the assist from Sital to keep it a four-point game, 38-34. Belyeu dropped in a put-back for Ropes and Bandy dropped in an easy lay-up to tie the game, 38-38, with 3:15 remaining in the quarter.

Boehning knocked down a jumper for the Nettes, as Sudan took a time out with 3:03 remaining in the third quarter. Out of the break, Boehning picked up a steal in the halfcourt and took it to the hoop for an easy lay-up, making the score, 42-38.

With 2:03 left to play in the quarter, Anderson dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Sital. She converted the free throw, making it a one-point game, 42-41. Boehning drove to the basket for a lay-up, but Anderson answered with a lay-up, cutting the Sudan lead to, 44-43, heading into the final quarter of play.

Boehning opened the fourth quarter with a jumper from the left leow, off of the assist from Sital, but Bandy answered with a layup making the score, 46-45. Anderson spun to the basket for a layup to give Ropes their first lead of the game, but Shultz as fouled on the other end on an attempt by Bandy. She split the attempts to tie the game, 47-47.

With 6:20 remaining in the contest, Lockhart grabbed a steal and tossed a save to Boehning, who pulled up for a jumper in the lane to give Sudan a brief lead, 49-47. Bandy responded with a lay-up to tie the game, 49-49, but Lockhart answered with a three from the left elbow off of an assist from Sital to put the Nettes back in front, 52-49.

Bandy dropped in a lay-up and Anderson went coast-to-coast on their next possession for a lay-up to put the Lady Eagles back in front, 53-52, with 4:49 remaining the contest. Ropes took a full time out with 4:31 remaining and out of the break, Lockhart knocked down a pull-up jumper in the lane off of an assist from Boehning to put Sudan back in front, 54-53.

With 1:29 left to play in the game, Lockhart drove to the basket for a lay-up, drawing an andone foul on Bearden. She missed the free throw leaving it a threepoint game, 56-53. Melton answered with a lay-up, as Ropes quickly called for a time out with 1:22 left to play in the game. Out of the break, Pointer knocked down a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Boehning and on the following play, Lockhart was fouled on the floor by Garcia, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line she made both free throws to make it a five-point game, 60-55.

Sudan took a time out with 45.19, and out of the break, anderson buried a three from the left elbow to make it a one-possession game, 60-58, as Ropes quickly called a time out with 31.21 seconds to play in the game.

With 13.86 Lockhart was fouled on the floor by Melton, who fouled out of the contest. Lockhart sank both free throws to make it a four-point game, as Sudan took a time out to set up their defense. Bandy dropped in a lay-up, but in the closing seconds, Lockhart was fouled on the floor; she sank both free throws to ice the game, 64-60.

Junior, Addison Boehning, led the team in scoring with 27 points, to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, while sophomore, Stevi Lockhart, chipped in 23 points, four rebounds, three steals two assists and one block.

Sophomore, Gracyn Shultz, tailed five points, seven rebounds and two assists, while sophomore, Braelyn Pointer, contributed five points, one rebound and one steal and junior, Liz Sital, finished with four points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.
