The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team improved to 2-0 in district play on Tuesday with a home victory over the Denver City Fillies in their first meeting of the season.
Freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a lay-up to open the first quarter for Littlefield on Tuesday and senior, Geyah Garza, picked up a steal and went coast-to-coast for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Valarie Yanez. She converted the free-throw to make it a, 5-0, scoring run for the Lady Cats.
Sophomore, Madison McNeese, dropped in a put-back off of a miss by junior, Brookelyn Gau, and Garza followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal to make it a, 9-0, scoring run as Denver City took a time out to talk things over with 4:28 remaining in the first quarter.
Out of the break, Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from McNeese, but on the other end, Yanez was fouled on an attempt by Gau, earning a trip to the line. She converted one-of-two shots at the line to get the Fillies on the board, making the score, 11-1.
Leilani Solis knocked down a jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Gau, as the Lady Cats took a, 13-1, lead into quarter number two.
Garza opened the second quarter with a free-throw line jumper off of the assist from Gau, as Denver City took a time out with 7:26 remaining in the first half.
Out of the break, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Alyssa Jimenez; she converted both free throws, stretching their lead to, 17-1. On the other end, Jimenez was fouled on the floor by McNeese, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She split the free throws, making the score, 17-2, with just under seven minutes to play in the half.
Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off ofthe assist from Gau and Garza followed it up with a jumper in the lane off of the assist from McNeese, making the score, 21-2. Solis kept the run going, as she stole a Denver City inbound pass and took it to the hoop for a layup, making the score, 23-2, with 5:13 to play in the second quarter.
Marley Jordon dropped in a putback off of her own miss for the Fillies, but on the other end, Arianna Cruz was fouled on a three-point attempt by Victoria Rodriguez, sending her to the line for free throws. She made one-of-three shots at the line to extend their lead to, 24-4, with 3:19 to play in the half.
With 2:39 remaining in the half, Jordon was fouled on the floor by junior, Ashtyn Parker; she split the free thorws to trim the lead to, 24-5, but on the next play, Edgemon was fouled on a defensive rebound by Jordon, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both free throws, stretching the Littlefield lead to, 26-5.
With under one minute to play in the half, Sydney Roberts dropped in a lay-up for the Fillies, drawing an and-one foul on junior, Emily Champion. She converted the free throw to cut the lead to, 26-8, but with time winding down in the half, Champion buried a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Cruz, making the score, 29-8, going into the locker room at halftime.
Garza dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Edgemon to open the second half, but on the other end, Jimenez dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Parker. The free throw was no good, leaving the score, 31-10.
With 4:32 remaining in the third quarter, Jordon was fouled on an attempt by McNeese; she split the free throws and Yanez followed it up with a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 31-13, with 3:31 to play in the quarter.
With under three minutes to play in the third, Solis was fouled on a jumper by Roberts. She made the first shot and missed the second, but Edgemon was there for the offensive rebound, which led to a lay-up for Garza, off of the assist from Edgemon, pushing their lead back out to, 34-13.
Edgemon drove the left baseline for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul. She missed the free throw, but a lane violation was called on Denver City, giving her one more try at the line, which she capitalized onto extend the Littlefield lead to, 37-13.
Zoe Garcia converted a pair of free throws with just over a minute to play, sending the Lady Cats into the final quarter of play leading the Fillies, 39-15.
McNeese knocked down a short jumper to open the fourth quarter, but on the other end, Roberts was fouled on a shot by Cruz; she split the free throws, making the score, 41-16.
Edgemon and Natalie Casas each split a pair of free throws and on the following play, Champion was fouled on a defensive rebound by Rodriguez. She converted both free throws to push the lead out to, 44-17.
Edgemon split a pair of free throws for the Lady Cats with 6:34 to play in the game, and McNeese followed it up with back-to-back lay-ups off of steals, as the Fillies called for a time out with 5:46 to play in the game, trailing Littlefield, 49-17.
With 4:40 remaining, McNeese spun to the basket for a lay-up, but the Fillies answered with a layup on the other end to make the score, 51-19. Champion converted a pair of free throws, after being fouled by Emma Spurgeon, stretching the lead to, 53-19.
McNeese knocked down a jumper from the free throw line and Edgemon drove the right baseline for a lay-up, but on the other end, Jimenez was fouled by Garza and sank one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 57-21. With time winding down in the game, Jordon converted a three-point play, as the Lady Cats took their first meeting with Denver City, 57-24.
Garza and Edgemon led the team in scoring with 15 points apiece, while McNeese joined in them in double-figures scoring with 12 points.
Champion chipped in seven points, while Solis netted five points, Garcia contributed two points and Cruz finished with one point in the contest.
The Lady Cats hosted Lamesa on Friday for their final game before the Christmas break. Results were not available at press time. They will host Slaton on Dec. 29th in non-district play when their season resumes.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
