LADY CATS THRASH LAMESA, 74-42

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team blasted the Lamesa Lady Tornadoes on Friday, 74-42, at Wildcat Gym.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 3-5 overall, 3-0 in district

The Lady Cats jumped out to an, 8-4, lead in the first quarter, as senior, Geyah Garza, pulled up for a jumper in the lane and sophomore, Madison McNeese followed it up with a jumper from the left side, off of the assist from junior, Emily Champion, making the score, 12-4, with just over three minutes in the

Reagan Derington dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Tatum Derington, but on the other end, McNeese answered with a jumper from the right wing, off of the inbound pass from Garza, making the score, 15-6.

Lamesa took a time out with 1:59 to play in the first quarter to avoid a turnover, and out of the break, Emma Garcia was fouled on an attempt by Champion. She converted both free throws, trimming the lead to, 15-8. Mahalia Huey was fouled on an attempt b Reagan Derington; she sank both free throws, making the score, 17-8, with 1:23 to play in the quarter.

Cruz sank a pair of free throws for Littlefield and Lopez split a pair for Lamesa, but at the buzzer, Garza drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Leilani Solis, as the opening quarter came to a close with the Lady Cats in front, 22-9.

McNeese knocked down a jumper from the left wing off of the inbound pass from Garza and on the next play, Garcia was fouled on an attempt by Parker sending her to the line for free throws. She converted both attempts at the line to trim the lead to, 24-11.

Freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, answered with a lay-up for Littlefield, off of the assist from Garza, but on the other end, Lopez was fouled on the floor by Edgemon, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She split the free throws, making the score, 26-12, with 5:53 to play in the first half.

After a series of free throws for both teams, Garza knocked down a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Solis, but on the other end, Garcia was fouled on the floor by Solis, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws, cutting the lead to,32-17.

With under one minute remaining in the half, Garza drained a three from the top of the key, drawing an and-one foul on Whited. She converted the free throw to finish off the four-point play, making the score, 36-17. Gashaa Edwards and Gau exchanged layups and with time winding down, Garcia was fouled on the floor by Garza. She connected on both free throws and Lopez followed it up with a three from the top of the key, to cut the lead to, 38-24.

At the buzzer, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Edwards and sank both free throws to make it a 16-point game going into the locker room at halftime, 40-24.

Edgemon opened the second half with a bucket for Littlefield, but Tatum Derington answered for Lamesa with a lay-up, making the score, 42-27. Edgemon again got to the basket for a lay-up, as Lamesa took a time out to talk things over with 6:22 left to play in the quarter. Out of the break, McNeese knocked down a deep two from the left elbow, but Garcia responded with a three from the left elbow, trimming the lead to, 46-30.

McNeese responded with a three of her own for Littlefield, making it a 19-point lead, 49-30. Gau was fouled on an attempt by Whited, who picked up her fourth foul of the game. Gau sank both free throws, pushing their lead to, 51-30.

With 4:18 left to play in the quarter, Champion passed the ball inside to junior, Ashtyn Parker, who dropped in a lay-up and Solis followed it up on the next play with a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from McNeese, pushing their lead out to 25 points, as Lamesa took a time out with 3:20 left to play in the third.

Out of the break, Champion converted a pair of free throws and McNeese scored on a fast-break lay-up to push their lead out to, 59-30. With 2:09 left to play in the quarter, Zoe Garcia was fouled on an attempt by Madison Derington; she sank both free throws, but Lamesa responded, as Sagan Oaks knocked down a three from the left wing to cut the lead to, 61-33. Lamesa closed out the quarter on a, 3-1, scoring run, trimming the lead to, 62-36, heading into the final quarter of play.

Garza was fouled on a put-back attempt to open the fourth quarter. She sank both free throws, pushing their lead to, 64-36. Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Garza, as the lady Cats took a time out with 5:42 remaining in the game. Out of the break, McNeese buried a three from the right elbow, drawing an and-one foul on Garcia. She sank the free throw to finish offthe fourpoint play, extending their lead to, 70-36.

Lamesa closed out the game on a, 6-4, scoring run, as the Lady Cats went on to take the, 74-42, victory over the Lady Tornadoes in their first meeting of the season.

McNeese led the Lady Cats in scoring with a game-high 21 points, and was joined in double-figures scoring by Garza, who netted 16 points and Edgemon, who finished with 11 points.

Gau tallied six points, while Solis and Huey each added five points and Cruz chipped in four points. Champion, Parker and Garcia each finished with two points in the contest.

The Lady Cats return to action on Dec. 29th with a home non-district game against Slaton.

Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
