LADY CATS TAKE DOWN SLATON IN CHAMPIONSHIP, 5-4

The Littlefield Lady Cat’s high school softball team won the Tournament Championship on Friday over Slaton, 5-4.

With the win, the Lady Cats finished the tournament with a mark of 3-1.

Littlefield jumped out to a, 1-0, lead in the top of the first inning, and in the bottom half of the first inning, Cadence Sanchez got Kam to line out to Julie Rodriguez at second base for out number one. Savy struck out looking for out number two, but Kristin singled to Rodriguez at second as she made a throwing error to first, giving Kristin second on the play.

Kayla flew out to right field to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Kaeleigh Logan grounded out to Adri at third base for out number one, but Vivika Ballejo drew a walk to give the Lady Cats a base runner. Ballejo took second on a pitch, before Gabby struck out swinging for out number two. Littlefield would strand a runner, as Briann McKinnerney was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike to retire the side.

Adri got things going for Slaton with a lead-off single to right field to begin the home half of the second inning, but Cadence Sanchez got Sam to strike out swinging for out number one. Adriana doubled to right-center field, as Lexi came on as the courtesy runner for the pitcher. Slaton took control of the game, as KK hit a two-RBI double over third base to put the Tigerettes up, 2-1.

Cadence Sanchez would recover, as she got Jac to ground out to her in the circle and Emily laid down a slap that was fielded by Cadence Sanchez in the circle, who threw to first for the out to end the inning.

In the top of the third inning, Slaton picked up a quick out, as Abigail Ybarbo popped up to Kam at shortstop for out number one. But, Bri Castillo would get on base with a walk, and she took second on a pitch to Julie Rodriguez, before Rodriguez hit a shot to Adri at third, who made a throwing error to first, giving Littlefield and RBI-double to tie the game, 2-2.

Alex Hernandez drew a walk and Cadence Sanchez singled up the middle, but Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second, making it two outs for the Lady Cats. Natalia Sanchez hit into a fielder’s choice to Adri at shortstop, who touched the bag for the force out to retire the side.

Kam singled on an error by Natalia at shortstop to lead off the bottom of the third inning for Slaton, and Savy laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Cadence Sanchez and thrown to first for the out, as the runner advanced to second on the play. Kristin hit an RBI single to center field on an error by Gabby, making the score, 3-2.

But, Kayla grounded out to Rodriguez at second base and Adri grounded out to first to end the inning, as the Tigerettes stranded a runner on base.

Logan laid down a swinging bunt and was thrown out at first by Adriana to open the fourth inning. Ballejo singled past second base and took second on a past ball, before Gabby flew out to center field for out number two. Ballejo stole third on a pitch, but she would be left there, as McKinnerney flew out to left field to retire the side.

Cadence Sanchez got the Tigerettes to go down in order in the bottom half of the side, as Sam popped up to her in the circle, and Adriana and KK both struck out swinging to end the inning.

Kam relieved Adriana in the circle for Slaton, as she got Ybarbo to fly out to left field to begin the fifth inning. Castillo singled to second base and took second on a pitch, but on a walk by Rodriguez, Castillo was thrown out at third by the catcher, Jac, for out number two. Hernandez singled down the third-base line and the runners advanced on a past ball, but Cadence Sanchez grounded out to Kam in the circle to retire the side, as the Lady Cats left two runners on base.

Slaton led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a shot to the left-field fence by Jac and Emily’s slap to shortstop was misplayed by Natalia Sanchez, moving Jac over to third to put runners on the corners. Kam lined out to Hernandez at third, who tagged out Jac for the double play. Cadence Sanchez got Savy to pop up to Rodriguez at second base for out number three.

Natalia Sanchez drew a leadoff walk to open the sixth inning. She went first to third on a past ball and scored on another past ball to tie the game, 3-3, as Logan drew a walk to give Littlefield another base runner. Ballejo was hit by a pitch, but Gabby hit into a fielder’s choice to KK at second base, who got the out at second base, as Logan advanced to third with one out.

McKinnerney walked to load the bases, but Ybarbo struck out looking for out number two. Castillo was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and Rodriguez also walked in a run to give the Lady Cats a two-run lead, 5-3. Hernandez popped up to KK at second base to retire the side.

Both teams were kept quiet in their next at-bat, but in the bottom of the seventh. Sam hit an inside of the park homerun over Castillo in right field to cut the lead to, 5-4, but Cadence Sanchez got Adriana to fly out to Castillo in right field and got KK to strike out swinging for out number two.

Jac drew a walk, but Emily’s slap to Cadence Sanchez in the circle was fielded and thrown to first for the out to end the game, as Littlefield took the championship contest, 5-4.
