The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team took down the Friona Squaws on Tuesday evening, 52-24, on the road.
With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 11-6 overall, 10-1 in district play.
Senior point guard, Geyah Garza, opened the contest with a three from the left elbow and the Lady Cats took a time out with 5:06 remaining in the opening quarter. Out of the break, Mahalia Huey passed the ball into junior guard, Brookelyn Gau, who dished it back out to junior guard, Emily Champion, who knocked down a three from the right elbow to push their lead to, 7-0.
Garza hit Gau on a back door cut with the inbound pass for a lay-up, but Ivary Shelby answered with a lay-up to end the scoring drought for Friona, making the score, 11-2, as the first quarter came to a close.
Sophomore, Madison McNeese, scored a lay-up in transition to open the second quarter and Garza followed it up with a lay-up to make the score, 15-2. Gau dropped in a put-back off of a miss by McNeese, but Laura Perez answered with a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 17-4.
With 5:48 remaining in the half, McNeese was fouled on the floor by Kambree Kimbrough. She split the free throws making the score, 18-4. With just over five minutes remaining in the quarter, Garza was fouled on the floor by Sharlene Maldonado; She converted both free throws to push the lead to, 20-4.
McNeese picked up a steal and took it the other way for an easy lay-up, but on the other end, Audrianna Trevino dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Emily Amaya, drawing an and-one foul on freshman, Arianna Cruz. She missed the free throw, making the score, 22-6.
Gau knocked down a pair of free throws and with 3:23 remaining in the half, Zoe Garcia was fouled on a defensive rebound by Amaya. In the bouble bonus she went to the line for a pair of free throws and split the attempts, making the score, 25-6.
Freshman, Kennadi Hanlin, picked up a steal and was fouled on an attempt by Maldonado; she split the free throws, stretching their lead to, 26-6. Garza sank a pair of free throws and in the closing seconds of the half, Gau hit Garcia for a lay-up to make the score, 30-6, heading into the locker room at halftime.
Trevino hit a runner from the right side to open the second half for Friona, but on the other end, junior, Ashtyn Parker was fouled on an attempt by Kimbrough and split the free throws extending their lead to, 31-8. Parker scored a put-back off of a miss by McNeese and Gau followed it up with a jumper in the lane off of an assist from McNeese, pushing their lead to, 35-8.
McNeese was fouled on an attempt by Trevino and sank both free throws to make the score, 37-8. Shelby knocked down a deep two from the left elbow, but on the other end, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Kimbrough; she sank both free throws, making the score, 39-10, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Huey split a pair of free thorws, but on the other end, Mags Licerio split a pair of free throws and Shelby dropped in a lay-up to cut the lead to, 40-13, as the third quarter came to a close.
Anahi Gonzalez dropped in a runner from the right side and Licerio knocked down a three from the top of the key to cut the lead to, 40-18. Gau dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from McNeese and McNeese followed it up with a three from the left wing, pushing the lead out to, 45-18, with just under five minutes to play in the game.
Parker knocked down a short jumper in the lane and with 2:32 remaining, Garcia knocked down a jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Hanlin, making the score, 49-18. With 2:19 left to play, Amaya was fouled on an attempt by Gau and converted both free throws, making the score, 49-20.
Garcia scored a put-back off of a miss by Cruz, but Amaya answered with a pair of free throws to make the score, 51-22. With under one minute to play Maldonado knocked down a jumper on the right elbow, but Hanlin split a pair of free throws to close out the game, with Littlefield taking the contest, 52-24.
Garza led the Lady Cats in scoring with 13 points, while McNeese tallied 11 points and Gau chipped in 10 points.
Garcia netted seven points, while Parker chipped in five points and Champion contributed three points. Hanlin added two points and Huey finished with one point.
The Lady Cats closed out the regular season on Friday with a home game against Brownfield. Results were not available at press time.
