The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team took down the Slaton Tigerettes on Tuesday at Wildcat 50-34.
With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 4-5 overall on the year.
Freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, got the Lady Cats going in the first quarter with a jumper in the lane off of the assist from senior, Geyah Garza, to put the Lady Cats up, 2-0. On the following play, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Payton Potts. She split the free throws to extend their lead to, 3-0, with 5:50 remaining in the opening quarter.
Mary Parker got the Tigerettes on the board, as she drove the left side of the lane for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play. She wasn’t able to convert the free throw, leaving the score, 3-2. Andrea Moreno took a charge on sophomore, Madison McNeese, but Slaton wasn’t able to capitalize on the turnover.
With just over four minutes to play in the first quarter, McNeese grabbed a defensive rebound and heaved an outlet pass down court to Garza, who finished the play with a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 5-2. Junior, Emily Champion, drove the lane and kicked it back out to junior, Brookelyn Gau, who knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line, making the score, 7-2, with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter.
With 2:36 left to play in the quarter, Natali Soto was fouled on an attempt by Gau; she split the free throws and on the other end, McNeese answered with a three from the right wing off of the assist form Garza, pushing their lead out to, 10-3.
Garza was fouled on a jumper by Sam Gatica and converted both free throws and McNeese followed it up with another three from the right wing off of the assist from Gau, extending their lead to, 15-3. With time winding down in the quarter, Potts dropped in a lay-up off of a turnover by Gau, trimming the lead to, 15-5, as the quarter came to a close.
Edgemon opened the second quarter with a lay-up off of the assist from Gau and on the next play, Head Coach Teddy Duncan called a time out to prevent a jumpball with 7:21 remaining in the first half.
Out of the break, Justyne Zapata drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Mary Parker, but McNeese answered for Littlefield with back-to-back buckets off of assists from Gau and Garza to stretch their lead back out to, 21-8. With just over five minutes to play in the first half, Moreno was fouled on an attempt by Edgemon. She made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score,21-9.
Garza knocked down a jumper from the right wing for Littlefield, making the score, 23-9, and the Tigerettes took a time out to prevent a turnover with 4:19 left to play in the half. Out of the break, Emma Muniz drove the left side of the lane for a lay-up and Potts followed it up with back-to-back buckets for the Tigerettes to cut the lead to, 23-15, with 1:32 left to play in the half.
Garza drained a three from the right wing off of the assist from Gau, but in the closing seconds of the half, Mary Parker knocked down a jumper in the lane off of the assist from Gatica, making the score, 26-17, going into the locker room at halftime.
Moreno dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Zapata to open the second half and Soto followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Mary Parker to cut the lead to five points, 26-21, but Edgemon dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Garza and on the next play, Garza fired a pass through traffic to Edgemon, who finished the play with a lay-up, making the score, 30-21, with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter.
Slaton took a time out with 4:09 to play in the quarter, and out of the break, Garza buried a three from the right wing, pushing their lead to, 33-21. Edgemon followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Garza, but on the other end, Mary Parker buried a three form the right elbow to trim the lead back down to nine points, 35-24.
Edgemon answered with a bucket and McNeese followed suit with a jumper from the free-throw line to extend their lead back out to, 39-24. Littlefield took a time out with 1:19 to play in the third quarter and out of the break, Mahalia Huey scored a put-back off of the miss by Edgemon, making the score, 41-24, as the third quarter came to a close.
Moreno was fouled on an attempt by junior, Ashtyn Parker, to open the fourth quarter. She made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 41-25. With 5:44 left to play in the game, McNeese buried a three from the right elbow, but Slaton answered, as Moreno knocked down a jumper from the left wing off of the assist from Potts, making the score, 44-27.
With 4:18 remaining, Mary Parker was fouled on an attempt by Ashtyn Parker; she split the free throws and on the next play, she picked up a steal from Garza and dropped it in for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Garza. She converted the free throw to cut the lead to, 44-31.
With just under two and a half minutes to play in the game, Edgemon knocked down a jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Garza and on the next play, Edgemon tipped a loose ball to Champion, who dropped it in for a lay-up, extending their lead back out to, 48-34.
Potts dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Huey. She converted the free throw, but Gau answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Champion to close out the game with the Lady Cats taking the contest, 50-34.
The Lady Cats were led in scoring by McNeese, who netted 15 points and she was joined in double-figures scoring by Edgemon, who netted 14 points and Garza, who finished with 13 points.
Gau tallied four points, while Champion and Huey each added two points in the contest.
The Lady Cats will resume district play on Jan. 5th with a road game at Dimmitt to take on the Bobbies.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
