The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team dropped their second district game of the season on the road on Saturday, as they fell to the Brownfield Lady Cubs, 11-0.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 5-4 overall, 0-2 in district play.
The Lady Cats struggled offensively to begin the contest, as Brianne Franco got Mykenzie Price and Geyah Garza to strikeout swinging for two quick outs. Cadence Sanchez hit a slow roller back to Franco in the circle, who got the out at first to retire the side.
Ashley Ramirez doubled to left field to lead off the bottom half of the first for Brownfield, but Abcde Garcia popped up to Sanchez in the circle for out number one and Franco flew out to Price in left field for out number two. Ashli Guerrero hit an RBI-double to center field to put the Lady Cubs up, 1-0.
Sanchez got McKenzye Perez to fly out to Price in left field to end the inning.
In the top of the second inning, Brookelyn Gau popped up to Millie Castillo in front of second base for out number one, but Malorie Garcia singled through the right side to give the Lady Cats their first base runner of the game. But, Madison McNeese struck out swinging and Kaeleigh Logan struck out looking to end the inning.
Sidney Fabila singled to right field to lead off the second inning for Brownfield, as Kamryn Martinez came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher. She took second on a pitch and third on a past ball, before Kenley Salas hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field that was caught by Tricia Tones, allowing Kamryn Martinez to tagup and score from third to extend the lead to, 2-0.
Jackie Castillo grounded out to McNeese at second base, but Millie Castillo drew a walk to give the Lady Cubs a runner. However, Sanchez got Ramirez to pop up to McNeese behind second base to end the inning.
The Lady Cats’ offensive struggles continued as they went three-up-and-three down in the top of the third inning.
Garcia opened the bottom of the third inning with a pop up to sec-and base that was lost in the sun by McNeese. Garcia took second on a pitch, before Franco flew out to Price in left field for out number one. Gutierrez hit a sacrifice fly ball to Price in left field, as Garcia tagged-up and scored to push their lead to, 3-0. Perez also flew out to Price in left field to end the inning.
The Lady Cats again went threeup-and-three down in the top of the fourth inning, as Garza and Sanchez each struck out swinging and Brookelyn Gau popped up to Gutierrez at first base to retire the side.
Fabila singled to Garcia at third base, and a bad throw to first, put her on second to open the bottom of the fourth inning. However, Sanchez would recover, as she got Salas to pop up to her in the circle for out number one. Jackie Castillo struck out swinging for out number two and Millie Castillo grounded out to Katelyn Gau at first base to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Garcia struck out swinging for out number one, but McNeese followed it up with a double off of the center-field fence, just missing a home run. She would be stranded on second, as Logan struck out swinging and Tones grounded out to Gutierrez at first base to retire the side.
The Lady Cubs got the sticks going again in the bottom of the fifth as Ramirez led off with a double over Price in left field. Garcia followed it up with an RBIdouble to left-center field, making the score, 4-0. Sanchez got Franco to pop up to her in the circle for out number one, before Gutierrez ripped an RBI-double over Price in left field to extend their lead to, 5-0.
Perez lined out to Garza at shortstop for out number two and Fabila grounded out to Garza at shortstop to end the inning.
The Lady Cats were kept off of the board in the top of the sixth, despite getting to runners on base and in the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Cubs pushed six runs across, including a two-run walk-off homerun by Gutierrez over the left field fence to end the game with the Lady Cats falling to the 11-0.
Sanchez pitched five innings for the Lady Cats giving up 11 runs and one walk, while earning one strikeout.
The Lady Cats hosted Denver City on Tuesday for their first meeting of district play. They will continue their season on Saturday with a home game against the Dimmitt Bobbies.
First-pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
