The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team began district play on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Hale Center. The Hornets took game one, 11-4, and game 2, 10-3.
In game one, Sudan took a, 4-1, lead into the second inning and never looked back, added two runs in the third inning, three in the fifth inning an two in the sixth inning.
Caleb Groetken started on the mound for the Hornets in game one, pitching five innings, giving up one hit, seven walks and three runs, two earned, while striking out nine batters. Cal Carter pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits, three walks and one run, while striking out one batter.
At the plate, Marcello King tallied three hits including a double and an RBI, while Groetken chipped in one hit for a double and two RBI’s. Julian Salas added two hits, one walk, an RBI and scored twice, while Carter contributed one hit, one walk and an RBI. Jaibryn Ornelas tallied one hit and an RBI. He also scored twice. Kyler Edwards also added one hit, one walk, an RBI, and scored twice in the contest.
In game two, Sudan jumped out to a, 3-0, lead in the top of the second inning, before adding five runs in the top of the fifth and two in the seventh inning. Hale Center broke through for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Carter picked up where he left off in game one, pitching five innings in game two, giving up four hits, two walks and three runs, two earned, while striking out four batters. Ornelas pitched two innings, giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out three batters.
At the plate, the Hornets totaled eight RBI’s, 13 walks and five extrabase hits. Sudan also totaled 10 stolen bases.
King led the way offensively finishing game two with three hits, including a triple and a homerun, one walk and two RBI’s. He also scored twice. Groetken added two hits, including a double and a triple, one RBI and one. He too scored twice. Ornelas added two hits, including a double and two RBI’s while Carter chipped in one hit, one RBI and three walks. Dylan Provence drew three walks and added an RBI, while Kincaid Boehning tallied two hits, two walks and scored twice.
The Hornets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 1st when they host Abernathy.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
