HORNETS FALL TO FLOYDADA AT 80-29

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team fell at home on Tuesday to the Floydada Whirlwinds, 80-29.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-6 on the year.

Floydada opened the first quarter on an, 8-0, scoring run, before junior, Michael Limon, was fouled on an attempt Morales, earning a trip to the line. He converted one-of-two shots at the line to get the Hornets on the board with 6:14 remaining in the opening quarter.

Jayson Cooper dropped in a layup for Floydada off of the assist from Trace Glasscock and Cooper followed it up with a drive and dump off to Brandon Marquez, who finished the play with a layup to stretch the lead to, 12-1, with 2:40 remaining in the quarter.

Cooper lobbed a pass up to Glasscock for a lay-up, as the Whirlwinds closed out the first quarter on a, 6-0, scoring run to take an, 18-4, lead into the second quarter.

Michael Limon opened the second quarter with a lay-up for Sudan, drawing an and-one foul on Abran Castillo. He was unable to convert the free throw, leaving the score, 18-6.

Kaleb Crone hit Quincy Gonzales with an alley-oop lob for a lay-up, and two plays later, Morales tipped a loose ball ahead to Crone for a lay-up, stretching the lead to, 22-6, with 6:39 remaining in the first half.

With just under six minutes to play in the half, Floydada took a time out and out of the break, Dez Wickware dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Jeremiah Castillo. He couldn’t finish the three-point play, leaving the score, 24-6.

The Whirlwinds went on a, 12-0, scoring run, before Sudan took a time out to try and slow down their momentum, with 3:59 remaining in the half. Out of the break, Abram Rodriguez was fouled on the floor by Marquez, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He made the first and missed the second free throw, trimming the lead to, 30-7.

Morales dropped in back-to-back lay-ups for Floydada and Abran Castillo split a pair of free throws, pushing their lead back out to, 35-7, with just over two minutes to go in the half.

Abram Rodriguez dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Josh Cervera, but Noah Garcia answered with a lay-up, to extend the lead to, 37-9. Michael Limon responded for Sudan with a jumper in the lane and freshman, Trent Wilson, followed it up with a cross court pass to Anthony Rodriguez, who buried a three from the right side, cutting the lead to, 37-14, with 1:11 remaining in the half.

Floydada would close out the half on a, 6-0, scoring run to take a, 43-14, lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Whirlwinds opened the second half on an, 8-0, scoring run, before Michael Limon was fouled on an attempt by Abran Castillo. He split the free throws, leaving the score, 51-15, with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter. Abran Castillo dropped in a put-back for Floydada, but Sak Juarez picked up a steal under the Sudan basket and dropped it in for a lay-up, cutting the lead to, 53-17.

Abran Castillo and Juarez exchanged lay-ups and on the other end of the floor, Marquez was fouled on an attempt by Anthony Rodriguez earning a trip to the line. He converted both shots at the line, but Anthony Rodriguez answered with a three from the left wing for Sudan, off of the assist from Wilson, trimming the lead to, 57-22, with 1:39 to play in the third quarter.

Juarez split a pair of free throws after getting fouled on a fast-break for Sudan, but the Whirlwinds closed out the quarter with a putback by Justin Delgado, off of the miss by Cooper, making the score, 59-23, going into the final quarter of play.

Floydada outscored the Hornets, 21-6, in the fourth quarter to take the contest, 80-29.

The Hornets were led in scoring by Michael Limon, who netted eight points and Anthony Rodriguez, who finished with six points. Wilson and Juarez each contributed five points in the contest, while Abram Rodriguez tallied three points in the game.

The Hornets traveled to Bovina on Friday to take on the Mustangs and hosted the Springlake-Earth Wolverines on Saturday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Dec. 29th with a home game against Farwell.
