The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team picked up their first district win of the season on Tuesday at home, as they shutout the Denver City Fillies, 19-0.
With the the Lady Cats improve to 6-4 overall, 1-2 in district play.
Junior pitcher, Brookelyn Gau, got Araceli Gonzales and Rocio Molina to strikeout swinging to open the first inning and she got Alexis Orona to pop up to her in front of the circle to retire the side.
Mykenzie Price was hit by a pitch to give Littlefield a base runner in the bottom half of the side. Price took second on a pitch to senior, Geyah Garza, before Garza ripped an RBI-double to left-center field to put the Lady Cats up, 1-0.
Garza went second to home on a past ball to extend their lead to, 2-0, but sophomore, Cadence Sanchez, grounded out to Haley Orona at shortstop for out number one. Brookelyn Gau singled up the middle and took second on a pitch to sophomore, Madison McNeese, before McNeese lined out to Haley Orona at shortstop for out number two.
Maloria Garcia singled on an error by Haley Orona at shortstop, as Brookelyn Gau advanced to third on the play. Sophomore, Kaeleigh Logan, though, would ground out to Gonzales at third to end the inning.
Brookelyn Gau made quick work of the Fillies in the top of the second inning, as she got the leadoff batter, Haley Orona, to strike out looking and got the next two batters to strike out swinging to retire the side.
Tricia Tones hit a slow roller to Gonzales at third and was able to beat the throw to first to give Littlefield a runner. Tones took second on a pitch to Katelyn Gau, and third on a past ball, before Katelyn Gau drew a walk. Tones would score on the play, as the ball got away from the catcher, making the score, 3-0.
Price lined out to second base and Katelyn Gau was doubled up at first to give the Fillies two outs. Garza ripped a double to right-center field and took third on a pitch to Sanchez, before Sanchez hit a two-run inside of the park homerun to the right field fence, making the score, 5-0.
Brookelyn Gau singled to shortstop, as the throw by Haley Orona pulled the first baseman off of the bag. Brookelyn Gau took second on a pitch, before McNeese hit an RBI-single to left field that was dropped by Elizabeth Hurtado, making the score, 6-0.
Garcia followed it up with an RBI-triple to left field to push the lead to, 7-0. Logan drew a walk, as Abigail Ybarbo came on as the courtesy runner. Ybarbo took second on a pitch, as Garcia scored and Ybarbo advanced to third on the throw home, pushing the lead to, 8-0. Tones singled up the middle for an RBI and went first to third on a past ball, but Katelyn Gau struck out looking to end the inning.
Hurtado drew a lead-off walk to begin the third inning, but Mariela Ceniceros grounded out to Garcia at third, as Hurtado took second on the play. She would be stranded on third as Destiny Diaz and Gonzales each struck out swinging to retire the side.
Price singled to center field to begin the bottom of the third and took second on a pitch to Garza, before Garza hit an RBI-single under Haley Orona at shortstop to extend their lead to, 10-0. Garza took second on a pitch to Sancehz and went second to home on a past ball to stretch their lead to, 11-0. Sancehz tripled down the third-base line, but Brookelyn Gau struck out looking for out number one.
Sanchez scored on an obstruction call at the plate, before McNeese popped up to Haley Orona at shortstop for out number two, as they extended their lead to, 12-0. Garcia grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Molina struck out looking for out number one, but Alexis Orona doubled over Tones in center field for the Fillies first hit of the game. She took third on a past ball, but Brookelyn Gau got Haley Orona to strike out swinging and the next batter to strike out looking to retire the side.
The Lady Cats went on to add seven runs to take down the Fillies, 19-0.
Brookelyn Gau pitched a complete game earning 11 strikeouts, while giving up just one walk.
The Lady Cats hosted Dimmitt on Friday. Results were not avaialble at press time. They will close out the first half of district play on Tuesday with a road game against the Muleshoe Lady Mules.
First-pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
