History of the Center

Back on open house day, April 3, 1981, District Judge Pat Boone cut the ribbon, with more than 400 people attending the event.

Lamb County Senior Citizens was organized when several senior citizens met March 25, 1981 in Lamb County Judge Don Joyner’s office in the courthouse.

They voted to purchase the ASCS building and the Top Dollar store at 211 Phelps Avenue, to be used as the Senior Citizen’s Center.

On April 2, 1981, the Lamb County Senior Citizens’ Club signing the papers to purchase the building for $50,000, according to Mancil Hall, who was president.

The club received $1,500 from South Plains Association of Governments to help with the project. The building is now paid for, and a new awning that was added across the front of the building in the summer of 2010, is also paid for. New roofing that was installed during the summer of 2013, is also paid for.

In the beginning, more than 200 members paid a $1 membership fee at that time, but currently, there is no membership fee assessed.

The first officers were: Mancil Hall, president; Mrs. Henry Brown of Amherst, vice president; Vada Crawford, secretary; and Harry Austin, treasurer.

Other directors were Herbert Nash, Amherst; Blanton Martin, and Archie Howard, both of Fieldton; Delbert Mouser of Spade; Nadine Weaver of Olton; Nuel Fannin of Springlake; Mrs. Buddy Free of Earth; Quenton Hodge, Cephas Glover and Fred McGregor, all of Littlefield.
