Safety project in Lamb/Hockley Counties begins Monday, Feb. 9th

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is set to begin a $2.19 million project to make safety improvements to US 84 in Lamb and Hockley counties, from FM 1072 to the Lubbock County Line. The project will add more than 10.5 miles of cable median barriers, which are designed to stop vehicles from crossing the open median and prevent the worst kinds of crashes, including head-on collisions.

“Over the past several years, cable barrier and concrete barrier have been installed along major divided highways across the South Plains, including along the I-27 and US 62/82 corridors, and US 84 in Lubbock County” said Neil Welch, P.E, TxDOT Littlefield Area engineer.

“This project will continue the work to install the barriers throughout TxDOT’s Lubbock District, and is expected to enhance the overall safety of the roadway.”

The project is scheduled to begin next week, on Jan. 9, with general contractor, Gratiot Construction, Ltd, from Richmond, Michigan, placing traffic control signs along the project limits. During construction, drivers should anticipate various inside lane closures on both east- and westbound US 84.

“Motorists are advised to drive with caution when entering the work zone, slow down, pay attention and watch out for workers and equipment,” Welch added.

The project’s completion date is scheduled for spring 2023.
