Lonnie Neinast wins week five football contest

Week five of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest is in the books, with one week remaining until the halfway point in our contest.

This week we had five contestants tie for the top spot with a score of 14-6: Lonnie Neinast, Richard Orozco, Brenda Herrell, Jimmy Garcia and Marcus Garcia.

The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the game between the Vikings and Lions; 52 points. Lonnie Neinast ended up with top honors, with a guess of 53 points, edging out Brenda Herrell, Richard Orozco and Jimmy Garcia, who were all two points off and will split the second and third place prizes evenly.

In the high school ranks, Littlefield suffered their first blemish of the season at the hands of the Brownfield Cubs, 28-14, while Sudan blasted the Cowboys for a Homecoming victory, 56- 12. Springlake-Earth went on the road and took down White Deer, 50-22, while Levlland defeated Lakeview, 17- 0, and Amherst 45’ ed Southland, 48-0. Plainview survived a scare from Hereford, 3532, while Stephenville edged out Rider, 43-42, and Permain took down Abilene-Cooper, 56-28. Coronado fell to Caprock, 40-24.

In the college ranks, Texas A&M pulled off their second upset in as many weeks, taking down #10 Arkansas, 23-21. Texas Tech pulled off the stunner in Lubbock, taking down the Longhorns in overtime, 37-34. Clemson survived a scare from Wake Forest, winning in double overtime, 51-45, and Tennessee took down Florida, 38-33. Ohio State ran by Wisconsin, 5221.

In the NFL, The Eagles took care of the Commanders, 24-8, while the Saints fell to the Panthers, 22-14, and the Titans edged out the Raiders, 24-22. The Dolphins handed the Bills their first loss of the season, 21-19, while the Ravens took down the Patriots, 37-26.

The rest of the scores for this week are as follows: Those who finished 13-7 this week were Marcelino Garcia Jr., Jan Smith, Donna Neinast, Ivan Estrada, JR Herrell, Ronnie Martin, Stevy Smith, Terrill Moorhead, Maria Pinon, Thomas Blackstone and Chris Ruiz. Contestants who finished 12-8 this week were David Neinast, Martin Duran, Dewayne Hayes, Alma Castillo and Larry Ashley.

Those who went 11-9 this week were Johnny Rosemond, Gary Edwards, J.C. Orozco, Devin Garcia, Tommy Cloninger, Ed Dabrowski and Charlie Smith, while Oscar Sanchez, Mark Grace, Teresa Dabrowski and Robin Elliott each went 10-10, and Sam Castillo and Marcelino Castillo each went 8-12 this week.

In the overall standings, we have a three way tie for the top spot this week with 70 points, between Garcia Jr., Jan Smith and David Neinast, while Donna Neinast and Duran are tied for second with 67 points. Brenda Herrell, Lonnie Neinast, Estrada, Rosemond and Edwards are tied for third with 66 points, while Marcus Garcia, JR Herrell and Hayes are tied for fourth place with 65 points.

J.C. Orozco and Sanchez are tied for fifth with 64 points, while Martin and Devin Garcia are tied for sixth with 63 points, and Stevy Smith, Moorhead and Cloninger are tied for seventh with 62 points. Pinon is in eighth place with 60 points, while Richard Orozco and Blackstone are tied for ninth with 59 points and Alma Castillo, Ashley and Grace round out the top 10 with 58 points.
