The D.L. with Derek Lopez

So, I’m taking a break from my vacation story, because Thursday was my wife’s birthday and I wanted to show her some love, because she doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves.

First off, Happy Birthday Marisa, I love you and hope you had an amazing day on Thursday.

A lot of people give me praise for the job I do at the Newspaper, as far as covering games, getting pictures, etc. But, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make it happen and one of the most important things that makes what I do happen, is what my wife does so that I can be at all these games.

Some of you know our kids some of you may not, and some of you know that we foster and some may not. So that everyone is on the same page, we have three little ones currently, 3, 2 and a four month old baby girl.

Not a lot of people realize when I’m at games on the sidelines, she is left to deal with all three kids, most of the time by herself. Every once in a while our oldest will get to go sit with his “big kid” friends who spoil him in the student section, but only at home games. And at certain sports, they have friends they can sit and play with, like at baseball and softball games, but they’re not always there.

She handles it all, keeping them entertained, keeping them from getting hangry, and making potty runs. And she makes so many of these trips with me because if she doesn’t I wont hardly get to see her or the kids.

During football seasons she starts the drive back on Friday nights, while I type my stories in the passenger seat at away games, until I am done and can take over, so that we aren’t getting back at three or four in the morning every away game.

She is a warrior, but there are those times she doesn’t get to go to the games and is left at home with all three kids, and for you parents out there, you know, sometimes the kids are angels and sometimes they act like they are all jacked up on Mountain Dew. If you’re a parent of multiple chil dren, specifically young children, you know it is not easy when you are outnumbered and alone.

So as we get set to embark on another season, I just wanted to show my wife some love and wanted her to know that I appreciate everything that she does for us and keeping everything moving each week, even when times get tough.

Because, let’s be honest when school starts I’m gone on Tuesday nights, Friday nights and Saturday morning’s, sometimes Monday and Thursday’s with tournaments and non-district competition, and she is left to deal with the house kids, pets and everything else.

She is our rock and my motivation to always want to do better for our family, and my best friend. I wouldn’t want to do this life with anyone but you. Thank you for all that you do for us and here’s to another year.

So if you see her around, show her some love too because she deserves it, and then some. Without her there is no, Derek the Sports Editor.

Switching gears a little bit, I have to talk real quick about the MLB All-Star uniforms, I think the MLB finally got it right, with the exception of the color of the AL jerseys, wish it would have been something different, but the NL jerseys were absolute fire. I loved the white and gold and that they had each players actually team they play for on the front versus just saying NL or AL All-Stars.

Being a Braves fan, naturally, I was rooting for the NL, and after that first inning, I really thought we were going to do something, but the AL snuck up and got us, behind two blasts from Stanton and Buxton and some great pitching all around.

It is hard to believe that summer has come and gone, but we’re just two weeks away from two-a-days and the first scrimmages are not long after. The seasons come and go so fast it is crazy, but I’m looking forward to another year of Lamb County Sports.
