Dustin Garrett, a local country music artist, has joined Grammy award-winning country music star, Rick Trevino, as his lead guitarist.
Rick Trevino will be performing at the Cactus Theater, located at 1812 Buddy Holly Ave. in Lubbock, on Saturday, July 23. Tickets will be available online at CactusTheater.com. Hannah Jackson, a Lubbock native, will be opening for Rick Trevino. Tickets are $20 to $50 each, with half of the theater already sold.
Garrett was raised in Anton, Texas and spent many years of his life in Littlefield. He attended school in Spade and his family band played in jamborees. He continued his education at South Plains College, where he earned his degree in commercial music.
“My mom and dad were both musicians, singers and performers,” Garrett said. “I actually performed a bit as a child in the Littlefield Jamboree, in all the jamborees back in the day.”
Garrett said some of his earliest influences are Ronnie Milsap and Bryan White. Garrett said he saw Rick Trevino in concert when he was five years old.
“Some of the earliest concerts that I ever, I guess, had processed what live performance was, just happened to be Rick Trevino,” Garrett said. “When I was five, I got to see Rick at the South Plains Fair. Rick, and other shows I’ve seen during that time, really shaped what I know as live performance and what music is all about. It gave me the drive to want to do that for the rest of my life.”
Garrett joined Rick Trevino in March of 2022 through a recommendation.
“I was recommended by a couple of touring acts that I’ve worked with before and this is a gig that I’ve always really wanted to have working with someone of Rick’s caliber and his style of music. It’s just really become a great thing.”
Rick Trevino will be playing at the Cactus Theater, where Garrett worked for five years. Garrett was the production manager, music producer and music director, along with performing in some of the shows at the Cactus Theater.
“It’s great for me to be able to work with someone like Rick, who is now going to get to come back to the place that I was so highly involved with for so many years. To be able to kind of come home and play for the hometown audience and them being able to see Rick in the process, it’s a really cool thing,” Garrett said.
Garrett said being able to get to know Rick and work with him has been a wonderful experience.
“That’s been the greatest joy, is getting to know him and the group that he’s working with, but I will say the first couple of gigs and jobs that I worked with him, I just had a huge sense of admiration for him for so many years. That’s how it was for a couple of shows, but they make you feel right at home and like I belonged with the group,” Garrett said.
Garrett said he is most looking forward to making good country music with Rick Trevino.
“Just the camaraderie of playing great country music together,” Garrett said. “Being able to enhance his show and to continue down the road with more music. It’s the camaraderie, that’s the main thing.”
