Maria Z. Garza

Maria Z. Garza, 93, of Springlake passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2021 at home. She was born April 13, 1928 in Karnes City, TX to Ramon and Candida (Chapa) Zamora.

Maria married Hilario Garza Sept. 11, 1948 in Santa Anna, TX. Together they had six daughters and one son. She was a selfless and dedicated homemaker who spent her time taking care of her husband, children and even her grandchildren and great grandchildren in her later years. She was an amazing cook, and everyone especially loved her tamales. She enjoyed playing Bingo and quilting. Most of all, family was important to Maria and she loved being with those she loved. She was affectionately called .Wela. to not only her family, but all who knew her.

She is survived by a son, Reynaldo Garza and wife, Mary Jane of Lubbock; five daughters, Jobita Fuentes of Earth, Geneva Castaneda and husband, Juan of Littlefield, Sylvia Fuentes and husband, Robert, Irma Olvera and husband, Jessie, and Patsy Garcia and husband, Felix all of Earth; twenty-six grandchildren; fifty-four great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilario Garza on September 30, 2018; a daughter, Candida Montiel; three grandsons, Johnny Rey Castaneda, Joey Montiel and Matthew Fuentes; two son-in-laws, Ricardo Fuentes and Jose Montiel; six brothers, Guillermo Zamora, Israel Zamora, Gilberto Zamora, Jesus Zamora, Raul Zamora and Erasmo Zamora; and four sisters, Ofelia Garza, Manuela Ruiz, Hortencia Ochoa and Genoveva Garza.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2021 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Earth with Father Eli Valdez officiating. Interment followed in Earth Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Luis Fuentes, Paul Montiel, Jesse Rey Garza, Steven Castaneda, Erik Olvera, Isaya Garcia and Cason Sharp. Special honorary pallbearers were her three grandsons,Johnny Rey Castanda., Joey Montiel. and Matthew Fuentes. Rosary was recited Tuesday evening, Sept. 28, 2021 at the funeral home. Arrangements were under the personal care of Hillcrest Funeral Home in Littlefield.
