The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team’ season came to an end on Monday, as they fell to the Borden County Coyotes, 29-5, in the Class 1A Bi-District round of the play-offs, dropping the first round series, 2-1.
In the top of the first inning, Evan DeLeon hit a grounder up the middle that was fielded by Tom Kingston at shortstop, who threw to first for the out. Trace Goodman hit a shot back at Trey Edwards on the mound, who got the out at first for out number two, but Jalen Solis picked them up with a triple to left field to give the Wolverines their first base runner of the game. The two out threat would not come to pass, as Davey Crandall hit a chopper to Tom Kingston at shortstop, who got the out at first to retire the side.
In the home half of the first inning, Tom Kingston singled through the left side to lead off for the Coyotes. He broke on a pitch to Mason Cole, as Cole lifted a ball into left field to execute the hit-and-run, as Tom Kingston went first-to-third on the hit. Edwards roped a two-RBI triple into left-center field to put the Coyotes out in front, 2-0, and Koda Bigham drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Borden County.
Austin Buchanan hit a two-RBI single up the middle to extend their lead to, 4-0, but Crandall got Justin Willborn to pop up to Goodman at third, who threw to first to double up Buchanan for two outs. Trent Lewis was hit by a pitch and Ethan Hargrove singled on an error by DeLeon at shortstop, as Lewis advanced to third.
Lewis scored on a past ball, as Hargrove advanced to third on the play, making the score, 5-0, before
Landen Foree drew a walk for the Coyotes. Foree was picked off at second by Solis behind the plate to end the inning.
Xavyer Mosqueda grounded out to Buchanan at third base to get the second inning under way, but Josh Samaron was hit by a pitch and Alex Alvarez hit a shot back at Edwards on the mound, whose throw to first was dropped by Hargrove, putting runners on first and second for the Wolverines.
Slade Beerwinkle singled on a fielder’s choice to Tom Kingston at shortstop, who made a bad throw to third to load the bases for the Wolverines. Gavin Gonzalez struck out looking for out number two, but DeLeon drew an RBI walk to trim the lead to, 5-1. Goodman was hit by a pitch to bring in another run and Solis followed it up with a two-RBI double to center field on the throw home past J-tom Price, slicing the lead to, 5-4.

The Wolverine’s offense fell quiet, as the Coyotes continued to capitalize on mistakes, adding four runs in the third inning and nine runs in the fourth inning to make the score, 29-4.
In the top of the fifth inning, Solis singled on an error by Buchanan at third base, and went first to third on a bad pick-off move to first by Bigham, before scoring on a past ball to trim the lead to, 29-5, as the Wolverines fell to the Coyotes in the Bi-district round of the playoffs.
