NETTES WIN HOME-OPENER OVER CROSBYTON

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity softball team picked up their first win of the regular season on Thursday with a victory over Crosbyton in their home-opener.

With the win, the Nettes, improve to 1-6 overall on the season.

Thalia Guerrero drew a lead-off walk in the top of the first inning for Crosbyton and took second and third, before Lexi Gonzalez too drew a walk to put runners on the corners for the Chiefettes. Gonzalez took second on a pitch, before Bayleigh Callaway blooped an RBI single over Blessy Montes at second base, making the score, 1-0, with runners on the corners.

The Nettes defense got Hannah Haynes out for the first out of the inning, but Rebekah Haynes drew a walk to load the bases. Mercedes Vega popped up in front of the plate and the ball was missed on a dive by the catcher, Gracyn Shultz. One run scored, but the batter was called for interference, giving the Nettes 2 outs with the score, 2-0.

Avery Fira hit an RBI grounder off of the glove of Liz Sital at third base to extend their lead to, 3-0, and Madison Vega drew a walk to load the bases once again for Crosbyton. Angelina Thorn, though, would get out of trouble, as she got Katie Dunn to strike out looking to retire the side.

Elora Thorn singled under the glove of the shortstop to lead off the bottom half of the side for Sudan and Angelina Thorn drew a walk to put runners on first and second for the Nettes. Sital hit an RBI double through the left side to cut the lead to, 3-1 and Shultz followed it up with a two-RBI double off of the top of the fence to tie the game, 3-3.

Laynee Jennings hit a sacrifice grounder to Azalia Rodriguez away from the bag at first, but she made the play at first as Shultz came in to score, giving the Nettes their first with one out.

Haylie Flores popped up to Fira behind second base for out number two, but Kinley Coker singled to left field on a drop by Gonzalez. Montes followed it up with a single off of the glove of the pitcher in the circle, but Coker was thrown out at third by Fira to end the inning.

Guerrero opened the second inning with a walk and Gonzalez followed it up with an RBI-single to right field to tie the game, 4-4. Callaway popped up to Shultz behind the plate for out number one, but Hannah Haynes hit an RBI-double under the glove of Melodia Rodriguez at shortstop to put Crosbyton back in front, 5-4. Rebekah Haynes drew a walk, but Mercedes Vega hit into a fielder’s choice to Sital at third base and Fira grounded out to Montes at second base to retire the side. Rodriguez struck out swinging to begin the bottom half of the inning, but Elora Thorn singled on a drop by Guerero in left-center field and she took second on a pitch to Angelina Thorn. Angelina Thorn drew a walk, as Elora Thorn broke for third on the play. The throw down to third sailed into left field allowing Elora Thorn to score to tie the game, 5-5.

Sital singled to right field and on a pitch to Shultz, Angelina stole third and scored on a bad throw down to third by Hannah Haynes, making the score, 6-5, in favor of the Nettes. Shultz followed it up with an RBI-single through the left side to extend their lead to, 7-5. Jennings struck out swinging for out number two, but Flores hit a short-hopper to Madison Vega at third and was safe at first. Coker hit a slow roller down the third-base line that was fielded by Callaway, but the throw to first was dropped by Rodriguez, allowing Shultz to score and Flores to take third on the play, extending the lead to, 8-5. Montes hit into a fielder’s choice to Madison Vega at third base, who got the out at second to end the inning.

Madison Vega hit a shot up the middle that was kept in the infield by shortstop, Kambry Tolbert, but she wasn’t able to make the play at first giving Crosbyton a base runner. Kattie Dunn hit into a fielder’s choice to Tolbert at shortstop, who flipped it to Montes at second base, but she was called for being off the bag. Guerrero hit an RBI-single to shallow left-center field, and the runners advanced to second and third on the throw home, making the score, 8-6.

Gonzalez followed it up with a two-RBI single to right field to tie the game, 8-8, but Callaway flew out to Elora Thorn in center field for out number one, but Hannah Haynes singled on an error as Montes dropped a pop up at second base. Angelina Thorn would get Mercedes Vega to pop up to her in the circle to retire the side.

Tolbert popped up to Fira at second base to lead off the bottom half of the third inning, but, Elora Thorn reached base on a short pop up to the pitcher, that Callaway couldn’t field. Angelina Thorn singled to right field, moving Elora Thorn over to third, but Sital popped up to Rodriguez at first base for out number two.

Shultz hit an RBI-single past shortstop to put the Nettes back in front, 9-8, and Jennings hit a two-RBI triple under the glove of Guerrero in left-center field to extend their lead to, 11-9, before Flores struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the top Angelina Thorn got the lead-off batter, Fira, to ground out to her in the circle for the first out of the inning. Madison Vega drew a walk, but Dunn hit a short pop up to Sital at third for out number two. Guerrero roped an RBI-triple to right field and Gonzalez followed it up with an RBI-single to right field to make it a one-run game, 11-10.

Gonzalez took second on a past ball and Callaway came away with an RBI-single on a dropped pop up by Jennings at first base to tie the game, 11-11 Hannah Haynes singled past Tolbert at shortstop and Rebekah Haynes drew a walk to load the bases, before Mercedes Vega hit an RBI-single to shallow center field, moving Rebekah Haynes over to third, as they regained the lead, 12-11.

Fira hit a line drive to shortstop that was stopped by Tolbert and they got Mercedes Vega in a rundown, before Sital tagged her out for the final out of the side. Crosbyton did cross two runs to extend their lead to, 14-11.

Coker drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, but Montes hit a shot back at Callaway in the circle, who got the lead runner at second for the first out of the inning. Tolbert singled up the middle and took second on the throw home by Guerrero, and Elora Thorn followed it up with an RBI grounder to third on a throwing error to first by Madison Vega, making the score, 14-12. Angelina Thorn hit an RBI-double to right field to make it a one-run game, 14-13, and Sital drew a walk to load the bases, before Shultz ripped a two-RBI double over third base to put the Nettes back in front, 15-14.

Jennings drew a walk and Flores followed it up with a two-RBI single to push their lead to, 17-14, before she was picked off at first by Fira for out number two. Coker kept the rally going with an RBI-single off of the glove of the shortstop to make it a four-run Sudan lead, 18-14, but Coker was picked off a few pitches later by Hannah Haynes to end the inning.

Crosbyton was able to tie the game, 18-18, in the top of the fifth inning, before Fira grounded out to Tolbert at shortstop to retire the side.

Montes over to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, but Tolbert flew out to Guerrero for out number one. Montes advanced to second on a bad throw to first by Guerrero on the play. Montes would steal third and score on a bad throw down to third by Hannah Haynes to put the Nettes up, 19-18, before Elora thorn and Angelina Thorn went down on back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Crosbyton took a one-run lead, 20-19, going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but Sudan would battle back, adding two runs of their own to take a one-run lead, 21-20, going into the top of the seventh inning.

Rebekah Haynes drew a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, but Mercedes Vega lined out to Tolbert at shortstop for out number one and Fira flew out to Elora Thorn in center field four out number two. Rebekah Haynes took second and third on pitches to Madison Vega, before she hit an RBI single up the middle to tie the 21-21.

Angelina Thorn got Dunn to strike out swinging to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the side, Elora Thorn drew a lead-off walk, before Angelina Thorn struck out for out number one. Sital hit a sacrifice grounder to the pitcher, who got the out at first for out number two. Elora Thorn stole third on a pitch to Shultz, before she ripped a walk-off single up the middle, as Sudan took down Crosbyton at home, 22-21.
