The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team dropped their regular season finale at home on Friday, 61-32.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 11-7 overall, 10-2 in district play.
Deja Johnson hit Tia Johnson for a lay-up to open the first quarter, but junior guard, Emily Champion, answered with a secondchance lay-up, off of an assist from junior, Brookelyn Gau, tying the game, 2-2. Senior guard, Geyah Garza, banked in a jumper from the left wing to give the Lady Cats a brief lead, 4-2, but on the other end, Deja Johnson dropped in a put-back off of the miss by Lyndsi Herrera to tie the game, 4-4.
With just over five minutes remaining in the opening quarter, junior, Ashtyn Parker, knocked down a jumper from the left elbow, off of the assist from Gau to regain the lead for Littlefield, 6-4, but the Lady Cubs quickly tied things up, as Dabria Blackwell went coast-to-coast for a lay-up, knoting the game, 6-6.
Herrera knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line and on the next play, Tia Johnson was fouled on an attempt by Gau, earning a trip to the line. She made good on both free throws to make the score, 10-6. Gabi Fields followed it up with a three from the right wing, as the Lady Cats quickly took a time out to talk things over, trailing the Lady Cubs, 13-6.
With 2:16 remaining in the quarter, Fields dropped in a layup off of the assist from Blackwell and followed it up by going coast-to-coast for a layup, stretching their lead to, 17-6. Fields dropped in another layup to extend their lead to, 19-6, but Garza answered with a trhee from the right elbow to trim the lead to 10 points, 19-9.
With time winding down in the first quarter, Blackwell hit Deja Johnson for a lay-up, making the score, 21-9, as the quarter came to a close.
Tia Johnson dropped in a layup off of the assist from Fields to open the second quarter and on their next possession, Franco was fouled on an attempt by Parker. She made one-of-two shots at the line, pushing their lead out to, 24-9, with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Garza scored on a third-chance jumper from the left elbow and sophomore, Madison McNeese, followed it up with a jumper from the right elbow, trimming the lead to, 24-13. Fields sent a pass through traffic to Tia Johnson, who dropped in a lay-up to make the score, 26-13, with 2:41 remaining in the half.
Littlefield took a time out with 2:40 remaining in the half, and out of the break, McNeese knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line, but on the other end, Tia Johnson was fouled on an attempt by McNeese. She converted both free throws, making the score, 28-15, with 1:101eftto play in the half.
With under one minute to play in the half, Gau knocked down a three from the right elbow, but Tia Johnson answered with a lay-up and Blackwell followed it up with a three from the right elbow to close out the half, with the Lady Cubs on top, 33-18.
The Lady Cubs opened the second half on a, 7-0, scoring run, before Garza buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Champion, making the score, 40-21. Garza followed it up with a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Ramirez. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 40-23, with 3:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Tia Johnsond drove the left baseline for a lay-up and Fields followed it up with a jumper from the left elbow to stretch their lead to, 44-23. With just over one minute remaining in the third quarter, Tia Johnson was fouled on an attempt by Gau. She converted both shots to make the score, 46-23. However, with time winding down in the quarter, McNeese was fouled on an attempt by Tia Johnson; she sank both free throws to make the score, 46-25, heading into the final quarter of play.
Garza drove to the basket off of a pick set by Gau, dropping in a lay-up on the right side to trim the lead to, 46-27. She followed it up with a lay-up off of an inbound play, but Fields responded with a floater in the lane, making the score, 48-29.
McNeese was fouled on an attempt by Ramirez and made one-of-two shots at the line, but Deja Johnson spun to the baket for a lay-up on the other end and Fields dropped in a fast-break lay-up, extending their lead to, 52-30. Littlefield took a time out with 3:08 remaining in the game, and out of the break, Blackwell buried a three from the right elbow, making the score, 55-30.
With under two minutes to play in the game, Miranda dropped in a lay-up off of an in-bound play, but freshman, Arianna Cruz, dropped in a floater from the left side to trim the lead to, 59-32. Brownfield closed out the game with a layup by Franco, as they took the 61-32.
Garza led the team in scoring with 16 points, while McNeese chipped in seven points and Gau contributed three points. Parker, Cruz and Champion each finished with two points in the contest.
The Lady Cats will take on Kermit on Thursday in the 3A Bi-district round of the play-offs at Denver City High School.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
