The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity basketball team ran away in the second half of their contest with Sudan on Saturday, taking the game on the road, 64-40.
With the win, the Wolverines improve to 5-3 overall, while the Hornets fall to 0-8 on the year.
The Wolverines jumped out to an, 18-11, lead in the first quarter behind 10 points from junior, Kaden Castillo and six points from junior, Keshan Holmes. But, Sudan junior, Michael Limon, kept the Hornets close, burying two three’s in the quarter for six of his seven points in the opening frame.
With just under six minutes to play in the second quarter, Holmes dropped in a lay-up, to stretch their lead to, 21-11, but on the other end, Michael Limon was fouled on an attempt by junior, Trace Goodman. He sank both free throws, trimming the lead to, 21-13. After a missed one-in-one opportunity by junior, Evan DeLeon, freshman, Jaden Conley, was fouled on the floor by Dereck Rosalas, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line for the Hornets. He converted both free throws, making it a six-point game, 21-15, with just under five minutes to play in the first half.
Junior, Abram Rodriguez, dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Sal Juarez, cutting the Springlake-Earth lead to just four points, 21-17. The Wolverines took a time out with 3:53 to play in the half and out of the break, DeLeon was fouled on an attempt by Michael DeLeon. He split the attempts at the line, but the Hornets responded again, as Michael Limon drained a three from the right elbow to make it a one-possession game, 22-20, with 2:40 left in the half.
Alex Alvarez was fouled on a put-back attempt by Abram Rodriguez; he made one-of-two shots at the line, stretching the lead back out to, 23-20. Holmes picked up a steal on the next play and got it to Goodman, who found Alex Alvarez for the lay-up, making the score, 25-20, with 1:21 to play in the half.
With time winding down in the quarter, Goodman split a pair of free throws, making it a six-point Wolverine lead going into the locker room at halftime.
Holmes opened the second half with a lay-up off of the assist from Timothy Tanaro, drawing an andone foul on Anthony Rodriguez. He missed the free throw, leaving the score, 28-20. Anthony Rodriguez responded for Sudan with a lay-up off of the assist from Abram Rodriguez to cut the lead to six points, 28-22.
The Wolverines took a time out to prevent a jumpball and out of the break, Castillo was fouled on an attempt by Juarez. He split the free throws, making the score, 29-22, with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter. Holmes scored a put-back off of the miss by DeLeon, drawing an and-one foul on Conley, as Sudan took a time out to talk things over. After the break, DeLeon converted the free throw to extend their lead to 10 points, 32-22.
With 5:13 remaining in the quarter, Holmes scored a put-back off of his own miss, but Anthony Rodriguez answered with a jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Michael Limon, making the score, 34-24. DeLeon split a pair of free throws, after being fouled by Conley, who picked up his fourth foul of the game and on the next play, Tanaro was fouled on a put-back attempt by Josh Cervera. He sank both free throws, pushing their lead out to, 37-24.
The Springlake-Earth run continued, as Castillo heaved an outlet pass down court to Holmes, who finished off the fast-break with a lay-up to make the score, 39-24. With 1:26 remaining in the quarter, Jaramillo dropped in a putback and sophomore, Braxton Ethridge, dropped in a lay-up in transition to extend their lead to, 43-24. With time winding down in the quarter, Ethridge hit Holmes for a lay-up, but at the buzzer Michael Limon knocked down a bucket to make the score, 45-26, as the third quarter came to a close.
Abram Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Jaramillo to open the fourth quarter. He made one-of-two shots at the line, but Castillo answered on the other end with a drive to the basket for a laythe 47-27.
Michael Limon answered with a three from the right elbow for Sudan, but Holmes came right back on the other end with a lay-up for the Wolverines to make the score, 49-30. Castillo was fouled on a jumper by Michael Limon, who picked up his fourth foul of the game. Castillo sank both free throws and on the next play, Holmes was fouled on the floor by Anthony Rodriguez, sending Holmes to the line for two free throws. He split the attempts at the line, making the score, 52-30.
Michael Limon was fouled on an attempt by Ethridge, who was called for a technical foul after the play was over sending Michael Limon to the line for four free throws. He converted all four shots to trim the lead to, 52-34, with 5:43 left to play.
DeLeon scored a put-back off of the miss by Jaramillo, but Michael Limon answered with a three from the left elbow for Sudan, making the score, 54-37. DeLeon, though, would fire right back, knocking down a three from the top of the key off of the assist from AlexAlvarez, making the score, 57-37.
Alvarez followed it up with a lay-up and Goodman split a pair of free throws to extend their lead to, 60-37, with 1:50 left to play in the game. Abram drove the lane and dumped the ball offto Michael Limon for a lay-up and on the next play, Juarez was fouled on an attempt by Rosales. He split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 60-40.
Rosales and Castillo scored back-to-back buckets for the Wolverines to close out the game, 62-40.
Holmes led the Wolverines in scoring with 23 points, and he was joined in double-figures scoring by Castillo, who netted 17 points. DeLeon tallied seven points, while Alvarez chipped in five points and Goodman contributed four points. Rosales, Jaramillo, Ethridge and Tanaro each finished with two points in the contest.
The Hornets were led by Michael Limon, who finished with a game-high 26 points to lead all scorers. Anthony Rodriguez tallied six points, while Juarez and Abram Rodrigeuz each added three points and Conley fmished with two points.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Dec. 28th when they travel to Post to take on the Antelopes, while the Hornets will be hosting Farwell on Dec. 29th.
