Lady Cats hold off Lady Eagles on the road, 4-2

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team held off a late come-back from Roosevelt to take down the Lady Eagles on Thursday, 4-2, to take the season-series.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 8-3 in district play.

Amaya McCanick pitched seven innings, giving up two hits, one walk and two runs, one earned, while striking out 11 batters.

In the top of the first inning, Bryndle Ray doubled on a line drive to left field to lead things off and Sophia Mata followed it up with an RBI-double to center field to put them in front, 1-0. Isaihla Garza drew a walk, and Mata took third on a passed ball, before McCanick lined into a double play to Stormy Trevino in center field, who fired home to Berkley Pursell to get Mata out, trying to tag up and score, giving them two outs.

Brianna Aleman singled throuh the left side, as Garza advanced to third to put runners on the corners for Littlefield, but Hannah Lopez struck out looking to retire the side.

McCanick made quick work of the Lady Eagles in the bottom of the first as she got Kyndal Grimes and Pursell both to strike out swinging and she got Zobri Bryant to strike out looking to end the inning.

In the second frame, Tailyn Gomez lined out to Kat Rodriguez at third base for out number one, but Abby Rodriguez drew a walk and Peyton Galvan singled on a hard ground ball to left field to give the Lady Cats a pair of base runners. Ray, though, would line out to Franco in left field and Mata popped up to Bryant at shortstop to retire the side.

In the home-half of the second, Kat Rodriguez doubled to left field on a line drive, but McCanick got Abcde Carranza to strike out swinging for out number one. Shauna Thompson struck out looking for out number two and Paislee Coltharp grounded out to Aleman at first base to end the inning.

In the top of the third, Garza struck out swinging for out number one, but McCanick picked her up with a double to center field to give the Lady Cats a base runner. Aleman lined out to center field and Lopez grounded out to Bryant at shortstop to retire the side.

The Lady Cat defense kept the Lady Eagles quiet in the bottom half of the third, as McCanick got Trevino to strike out swinging for out number one. Putman laid down a bunt and reached on an error by Garza to give the Lady Eagles a base runner. Grimes laid down a bunt that was fielded by Aleman and throw to Garza at first base for out number two and Pursell grounded out to McCanick in the circle to end the inning.

The Lady Cats found some offense in the top of the fourth, as Gomez singled on a ground ball to left field to lead off the inning for the Lady Cats. Abby Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt that as fielded by Kat Rodriguez and thrown to first for the out, as Gomez advanced to second with one out. Galvan struck out looking for out number two, but Ray doubled on a fly ball to right field, as Gomez scored from second, making the score, 2-0.

Mata roped an RBIdouble to left field, as Ray scored from second, stretching their lead to, 3-0, before Garza struck out swinging to retire the side.

The Lady Cat defense made quick work of the Lady Eagles in the top of the third, as Bryant grounded out to Ray at shortstop for out number one and Kat Rodriguez grounded out to Mata at third base for out number two. McCanick got Carranza to strike out swinging to end the inning.

Both teams went threeup- and-three-down in the fifth inning, and in the top of the sixth, Gomez grounded out to Kat Rodriguez at third and Abby Rodriguez grounded out to Bryant at shortstop for out number two. Janella Rodriguez pinch hit for Galvan and drew a walk to give the Lady Cats a base runner. Ray singled to center field, but Mata hit into a fielder’s choice to Kat Rodriguez at third base, who stepped on third for the force out to retire the side.

The Lady Eagles would strike back in the bottom half of the inning, as Putman singled on an error by Rodriguez at second base. Putman would take second on a passed ball, before Grimes grounded out to Ray at shortstop for out number one. Putman took third on the play. Pursell grounded out to Mata at third base for out number two, but Putman would score on a passed ball to make the score, 3-1, before Bryant lined out to Galvan in center field to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, London Taylor grounded out to Bryant at shortstop for out number one, but McCanick doubled on a line drive to right field to give the Lady Cats a base runner. McCanick took third on a passed ball, before Aleman blated an RBIdouble to center field to make the score, 4- 1. Aleman was picked off at second for out number two and Lopez grounded out to Kat Rodriguez to end the inning.

Roosevelt cut the lead in half in the bottom of the seventh, as Kat Rodriguez gave blasted a solo homerun to left field, making the score, 4- 2. McCanick would recover, as she got Carranza to pop up to Lopez in foul territory for out number one. Thompson struck out swinging for out number two, but Coltharp drew a walk to give the Lady Eagles a base runner.

However, Trevino would ground out to Abby Rodriguez at second base to end the game, as Littlefield took the contest, 4-2.

The Lady Cats were open Tuesday and will wrap up their regular season on Saturday with a home game against Slaton. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
