Sudan High School debaters compete in Austin State Championship

During spring break, five Sudan High School debate competitors traveled to Austin for the CX Debate State Tournament at the University of Texas. The team competed against 90 2-A debaters.

Bethani Magby won the fourth-place top speaker award. Alongside her teammate Caden Edens, the two made it to the second day of competition and earned octofinalist medals.

Through their efforts, Magby and Edens are eligible to apply for Texas Interscholastic League Foundation (TILF) Academic scholarships. TILF offers scholarships to high school seniors who compete at UIL Academic State competitions and plan to attend a Texas college or university.

Angelina Godwin and Alyssa Montes earned a 22 record on the first day of the competition, nearly advancing to the second day of competition. Andrew Godwin also attended the competition as an alternate.

“With such young teams – none having more than 2 years of experience – they have achieved a lot this year,” Jonathan Robertson, the team’s academic coach, said. “We are looking forward to great things in the

future.”
