Fillies cruise past Crosbyton, 73-26

The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team opened play at the Whitharral Tournament on Thursday morning, cruising past the Crosbyton Chiefettes, 7326.

With the win, the Fillies improved to 1-0 in tournament play. Jentry Bressler opened the scoring for Olton with a put-back off of a miss by Mariana Gallegos, but Crosbyton answered quickly, as Demi Daugherty knocked down a jumper from the right side to tie the game, 2-2. Taryn Smith responded with a three from the top of the key, off of an assist from Kaleigh Geldenhuys and Amie Beelitz followed it up with a lay-up, off of an assist from Harlow Gorman, pushing their lead to, 7-4, with 5:05 to play in the opening quarter.

Emily Garcia took a charge on Geldenhuys and Crosbyton capitalized on the turnover, as Alexis Godinez knocked down a jumper from the right wing, making the score, 7-4. Smith and Ella Azam knocked down back-to-back threes, off of assists from Bressler and Llama Ramirez followed it up with a put-back off of her own miss, stretching their lead to, 15-4.

With just over a minute left to play in the first quarter, Smith was fouled on an attempt by Garcia, earning a trip to the line. She sank both shots at the line to make the score, 17-4, as Crosbyton took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Garcia was fouled on an attempt by HalleKate Huguley. She made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 17-5. With time winding down in the quarter, Gallegos drained a three from the right wing, making the score, 20-5, as the first quarter came to a close.

Daugherty dropped in a lay-up to open the second frame for Crosbyton, but Olton would respond, as Bressler went coast- tocoast for a lay-up, extending their lead to, 22-7. With 5:44 to play in the half, Kambri Ruiz drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Geldenhuys for a lay-up to make the score, 24-7.

Kaybree Ramon knocked down a jumper from the right wing and Huguley followed it up with a jumper in the lane, off of an assist from Ramon, stretching the lead to, 28-7. Olton’s scoring run continued, as Smith dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Gallegos, pushing their lead to, 30-7.

With 3:32 to play in the half, Bressler was fouled on an attempt by Flores, earning a trip to the line. She made one-of-two shots at the line and followed it up on their next possession with a lay-up, making the score, 33-7, with 3:12 left to play in the second quarter.

Gallegos went coast-tocoast for a lay-up for Olton and Geldenhuys drove the middle, lobbing a pass over the defense to Beelitz, who finished with a lay-up, extending their lead to, 37-7.

Geldenhuys would end the half with a deep three from the left elbow, off of an assist from Kambri Ruiz, as Olton ended the first half on a, 20-2, scoring run.

Novalee Salazar got Crosbyton going early in the third quarter, using a eurostep to get into the paint for a floater, trimming the lead to, 40-9. With six minutes remaining in the third quarter, Bressler dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Gallegos, drawing an andone foul on Daugherty, her second of the game. Bressler converted the free throw, pushing their lead to, 43-9.

Geldenhuys grabbed a defensive rebound and dished the outlet pass ahead to Bressler on the fastbreak for a lay-up, but on the other end, Flores was fouled on an attempt by Geldenhuys, her second of the game. Flores converted both free throws, trimming the lead to, 45-11. Beelitz would grab an offensive rebound off of a missed free throw by Kambri Ruiz, and Geldenhuys would dropped in a lay-up, drawing an andone foul on Daugherty, her third of the game. She converted the free throw, stretching the lead to, 4811, with 5:15 to play in the third quarter.

Gallegos sank a pair of free throws, after being fouled by Flores, who picked up her third foul of the game, but Crosbyton would answer, as Godinez dropped in a floater in the lane, making the score, 5013. Beelitz dropped in a layup for Olton and after a pair of missed free throws by Flores, Ramirez would drop in a lay-up off of an inbound play, making the score, 5413. Godinez buried a three from the top of the key, but on the other end, Ramirez was fouled on an attempt by Salazar. Ramirez split the attempts at the line, pushing their lead to, 55-16, with 2:13 left to play in the quarter.

Gorman and Godinez each drained a three for their teams to close out the third quarter with Olton in control, 58-19.

After a Crosbyton time out to open the fourth quarter, Gallegos hit Smith with the outlet pass for a lay-up on the fast-break to make the score, 60-19. Flores was fouled on an attempt by Geldenhuys, her fourth of the game. She missed both free throws, but Mila Pesina would drop in a layup, off of an assist from Garcia to cut the lead to, 6021.

Bressler dropped in a layup for Olton to make the score, 62-21, with 5:30 left to play. But with 4:27 remaining, Garcia was fouled on an attempt by Azam, her second of the game. She made one-of-two shots at the line, but Azam answered with a three from the left elbow, off of an assist from Beelitz, and Huguley followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Azam, stretching their lead to, 6722.

Daugherty knocked down a jumper from the top of the key and Godinez converted a pair of free throws, but Olton responded, as Gorman knocked down back-to-back threes from the wing, pushing their lead to, 73-26, as the Fillies moved to 1- 0 at the Whitharral Invitational.

Bressler led the Fillies in scoring with 14 points and she was joined in doublefigures scoring by Smith, who netted 12 points.

Gorman tallied nine points, while Geldenhuys chipped in eight points and Gallegos contributed seven points. Azam and Beelitz each added six points, while Ramirez chipped in five points, and Huguley added four points. Ramon finished five two points in the contest.
