Steve Raney wins Week 7 Football Contest

The Lamb County Leader-News’ annual football contest’s wrapped up week seven last week, as High School teams across the state began district play.

Brenda Herrell and Steve Raney tied for the top spot this week with a 17- 3 mark, while we had four contestants tie for second place with a mark of 16-4. They are, Jan Smith, Johnny Rosemond, Mark Grace and Ronnie Martin.

The tie-breaker for week seven was the combined score of the Jets and Broncos, which was 24 points.

Raney took first place with a guess of 41 on the tie- breaker, edging out Brenda Herrell, who guessed 46 points, leaving her in second place.

Grace took third place by way of tie-breaker with a guess of 41 points, edging out Rosemond, who guessed 45 points, Jan Smith, who guessed 48 points and Martin, who guessed 52 points.

In the high school ranks, Slaton got out to a fast start and Littlefield was unable to recover, as the Tigers won the district-opener over the Wildcats, 49-33. Sudan blasted Lockney, 50- 6, while Olton shutout Floydada, 56-0. Springlake-Earth took down Hart, 5227, while Estacado grinded out a victory over Levelland, 20-13, and West Plains took care of Canyon, 39-10.

Sonora throttled Forsan, 42-8, while Dalhart handled Denver City, 54-22, and Amherst 45’ed the West Texas Tornadoes, 45- 0. Monahans edged out a win over Snyder, 37-33.

In the college ranks, Texas won this year’s edition of the Red River Rivalry, 23-6, while Notre Dame overcame a slow start to take care of North Carolina State, 36-7. Wyoming took down San Jose State, 35-28, while Appalachian State defeated Georgia State, 41-20, and UCLA took down Michigan State, 38-13.

In the NFL this week, the Colts edged out the Cardinals, 31- 27, while the Chargers snuck by the Dolphins, 29-27, and the Patriots defeated the Saints, 2519. The Chiefs defeated the Lions, 30-17, and the Packers took down the Bengals, 27-18.

The rest of the contestant scores for week one are as follows: 

Those who finished 15-5 this week were Dewayne Hayes, Ed Dabrowski, JC Orozco, Jonathan Magallanes, JR Herrell, Lonnie Neinast, Martin Duran, Richard Orozco, Stevy Smith, Teresa Dabrowski and Terrill Moorhead. Contestants who finished 14-6 this week were John Hernandez, Micky Orozco, Stephanie Dabrowski and Tim Walker, while Juan Garza, Larry Ashley, Robin Elliott and Sam Castillo, each finished 13-7 this week.

Alma Castillo and Jimmy Garcia each finished 12-8, while Stetson Sedberry finished 11-9 and Maria Pinon finished 10-10. Moe Castillo rounded out the field this week with a mark of 8-12.

In the overall standings, Martin takes over the top spot with 106 points, while Duran sits in second with 103 points and Jr Herrell and Stevy Smith are tied for third place with 101 points. Hayes, JC Orozco and Lonnie Neinast are tied for fourth with 100 points, while Brenda Herrell and Raney are tied for fifth with 99 points.

Jan Smith sits in sixth with 98 points, while Magallanes and Richard Orozco are tied for seventh with 97 points, and Rosemond is in eighth with 95 points. Micky Orozco is in ninth with 94 points and Garza and Ashley are tied with 93 points to round out the top 10.
