The Lamb County Leader-News’ annual football contest rolled into week two’s set of games with all three leagues getting underway; the high school ranks, college and NFL.
Jan Smith took first place in week two’s contest, finishing with a mark of 18-2, while Charlie Smith finished in second place with a record of 17-3.
We had a tie for third place between Ronnie Martin and JC Orozco, who each finished with a mark of 16-4.
The tie-breaker for week one was the combined score of the Lions and Packers, which was 40 points. Both contestants guessed 48 points, forcing an even split of the third-place winnings.
In the high school ranks, Littlefield bounced Denver City in their home-opener, 34-14, while Sudan blasted Tahoka, 40-12, and Olton took down Dimmitt, 33-14. Springlake-Earth fell on the road to Paducah, 73-24, while Amherst came up short against Christ the King, 59-55.
Miami blasted Rotan, 626, while Memphis won a low- scoring game over Crosbyton, 7-6, and Seminole took down Shallowater, 45-27. KPA took care of Anton, 62-12.
In the college ranks, Oregon demolished Oklahoma State, 69-3, while Oklahoma took care of Michigan, 24--13, and Illinois took down down Duke, 45-19. Syracuse came back to take down UConn in overtime, 27-20.
In the first week of NFL action, the Buccaneers edged out the Falcons, 2320, while the Bengals snuck by the Browns, 17-16, and the Raiders took down the Patriots, 20-13. The 49’ers took care of the Seahawks, 17-13, while the Bills won a shootout over the Ravens, 41-40.
The rest of the contestant scores for week one are as follows: Those who finished 15-5 this week were Juan Garza, Richard Orozco and Stephanie Dabrowski, while 14-6 finishers this week included Brenda Herrell, David Neinast, Dewayne Hayes, Donna Neinast, JR Herrell, Martin Duran, Micky Orozco and William Albus.
Those who went 13-7 this week are Aaron Moore, Larry Ashley, Lonnie Neinast, Mark Grace, Moe Castillo, Sam Castillo and Stevy Smith, while Those who went 12-8 are Johnny Rosemond, Jonathan Magallanes, Robin Elliott, Stetson Sedberry, Teresa Dabrowski and Terrill Moorhead.
Alma Castillo, Ed Dabrowski, Maria Pinon and Tim Walker each went 11-9 this week, while Ronald Williams went 9-11 and Jimmy Garcia finished 8-12.
In the overall standings, Jan Smith and Charlie Smith are tied for first place with 32 points, while Duran is in second place with 31 points and JC Orozco and Martin are tied for third with 29 points. David Neinast, Hayes and Albus are tied for fourth with 28 points, while Garza, Richard Orozco, Stephanie Dabrowski and Donna Neinast are tied for fifth with 27 points.
Brenda Herrell, JR Herrell, Micky Orozco and Stetson Sedberry are tied for sixth place with 26 points, while Lonnie Neinast, Sam Castillo, Elliott, Teresa Dabrowski and Alma Castillo are tied for seventh with 25 points, and Larry Ashley, Moe Castillo, Stevy Smith, Rosemond and Magallanes are tied for eighth with 24 points.
Moorhead, Ed Dabrowski and Walker are each tied for ninth with 22 points and Pinon rounds out the top 10 with 21 points.
