Martin Duran takes week one of Football Contest

The Lamb County Leader-News’ annual football contest made it’s return last week with its first round of games in the high school and college ranks.

Martin Duran took first place in week one’s contest, finishing with a mark of 17-3, while Charlie Smith finished in second place with a record of 15-5.

We had a six-way tie for third place, as David Neinast, Dewayne Hayes, Jan Smith, Alma Castillo, William Albus and Stetson Sedberry each finished with a mark of 14-6.

The tie-breaker for week one was the combined score of Tarelton State and Army, which was 57 points.

David Neinast guessed the closest with a guess of 54 points, edging out Jan Smith’s guess of 53 points, Albus’ guess of 63 points, Hayes’ guess of 48 points and Alma Castillo, who guessed 39 points.

In the high school ranks, Littlefield edged out Lamesa on the road, 49-47, while Sudan won their weather-shortened home-opener, 19-7, over Olton. Springlake-Earth and Whitharral had to finish their contest on Saturday, with the Panthers taking the contest, 71-22, while Westbrook took down Nazareth, 65-20.

Dumas shutout Caprock, 51-0, while Randall took down Plainview, 44-23, and Dalhart blasted Levelland, 55-15. Greenwood defeated Childress, 42-21, while Muleshoe won their homecoming game over Brownfield, 4212. Amherst fell to KPA, 58-12.

In the college ranks, Ohio State spoiled the Longhorns seasonopener, 14-7, while Florida State upset Alabama, 31-17, and LSU defeated Clemson, 17-10. Miami edged out the Fighting Irish on Sunday, 27-24, while Utah put a thrashing on UCLA, 43-10. Washington State won a low-scoring game over Idaho, 13-10, while Texas State handeled business against Eastern Michigan, 52-27.

Tulane took down Northwestern, 23-3, while Maryland blasted Florida Atlantic, 39-7, and Indiana defeated Old Dominion, 27-14.

The rest of the contestant scores for week one are as follows: Those who finished 13-7 this week were Donna Neinast, John Hernandez, JC Orozco, Robin Elliott, Ronnie Martin and Teresa Dabrowski, while 12-8 finishers this week included, Brenda Herrell, Stephanie Dabrowski, Johnny Rosemond, JR Herrell, Juan Garza, Lonnie Neinast, Micky Orozco, Richard Orozco, Sam Castillo and Jonathan Magallanes.

Contestnats who finished 11-9 this week were Ed Dabrowski, Jimmy R. Garcia, Larry Ashley, Tim Walker, Stevy Smith, Steve Raney and Moe Castillo. Maria Pinon and Terrill Moorhead rounded out the field this week each finishing 10-10.
