Paraprofessional Appreciation Day is a special day dedicated to those who work in a classroom under a teacher’s direction. A paraprofessional is someone who works under a professional’s guidance to help them in their job. In the school sector, paraprofessional educators are also known as teacher’s aides, paraeducators, para-pros, and classroom assistants. These fantastic people deliver targeted support to students who may need extra help and work to maintain the classroom, keeping it running smoothly. Paraprofessionals are the unsung heroes of the education system - without their strong foundation, teachers frequently report feeling overwhelmed and overworked. Paraprofessionals help shoulder the workload and allow teachers to focus on what they do best teach! Paraprofessional Appreciation Day seeks to bring these professionals to the forefront and show them a little extra love for all the incredible work they do, day in and day out.
Paraprofessional Appreciation Day always takes place on the first Wednesday of April each year. In 2025, Paraprofessional Appreciation Day falls was on Wednesday, April 2.
In the 1960s, paraprofessionals were hired to work in schools thanks to an anti-poverty program implemented by President Lyndon B. Johnson. However, paraprofessionals were typically seen as “lesser than,” due to the low salary attributed to the role. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the impact of paraprofessionals began to take shape, as the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) campaigned for better salaries and benefits for these professionals. Through the 1970s, the role of paraprofessional transformed from a low-wage job to a sought-after profession. It is believed that the idea of honoring paraprofessionals came a little later when the governor of Missouri decided to celebrate the work of paraprofessionals in the education sector. Since then, Paraprofessional Appreciation Day has spread across the country, with many school districts taking the first Wednesday in April as a chance to say “ thanks.”
