The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team secured a season- sweep of the Dimmitt Bobbies on Saturday, behind a no-hitter from freshman pitcher, Amaya McCanick.
McCanick pitched four innings for the Lady Cats, giving up two walks, while striking out nine batters.
McCanick made quick work of the Bobbies in the top of the first inning, as she struck out the side. Yollet Venzor, Yesnia Dones and Julia LaRue all went down swinging to retire the side.
In the home half of the first inning, Bryndle Ray doubled to center field to lead things off and she stole third, before Alyssa Torres hit a pop up to Mia Pacheco at shortstop, who dropped the ball, allowing Ray to score, putting the Lady Cats in front, 1-0. Torres stole second on a pitch and third on a passed ball, before scoring on another passed ball to stretch the lead to, 2-0.
Bri Aleman doubled to left-center field to give the Lady Cats a base runner and Natalia Sanchez drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Littlefield. Cali Saldana flew out to Nathalia Ogaz in left field for out number one, and Aleman was doubled up at second after not tagging up for out number two. Sanchez took second and third on pitches, before Maggie McNeese hit an RBIsingle up the middle to push the lead to, 3-0.
McCanick, though, would pop up to Pacheco at shortstop to end the inning.
Lauren Medeles hit a one-hopper to Sanchez at second base, who got the out at first to begin the second inning, but Adryane Rosas and Ximena Terrazas drew back-to-back walks to give the Bobbies their first base runners of the game. McCanick would recover in the circle, as she got Ogaz and Pacheco, both to strike out looking to retire the side.
In the bottom of the second, Abby Rodriguez got the Lady Cats going with a single to left field; she took second on a bad throw in from the outfield to put a runner in scoring position for the Lady Cats. Myli Hernandez laid down a bunt on the third base side, that was bobbled by the pitcher LaRue, putting runners on the corners for Littlefield.
Ray hit a two-RBI double off of the right-center field fence to push their lead to, 5-0, and she took third on a pitch, before Torres hit a sacrifice to Rosas at first, who got the out at first as Ray scored to extend their lead to, 6-0. Aleman struck out swinging for out number one, but Sanchez singled to third on an error by the first baseman, allowing her to take second on the play.
Sanchez stole third on a pitch, but Saldana popped up to Medeles at second base to end the inning.
McCanick and the Lady Cat defense went back to work in the third inning, as Chasisty Navarro and Venzor both struck out looking and Dnes grounded out to Aleman at third to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the inning, McNeese hit a double over Ogaz in left field and McCanick singled on an error by Rosas, putting runners on the corners for Littlefield. Rodriguez ripped a two-RBI triple to left field to make the score, 8-0, and Hernandez followed it up by making it to first on a dropped third strike that got by the catcher, allowing Rodriguez to score to make the score, 9-0.
Hernandez took second on a pitch, before Ray singled over first to put runners on the corners for the Lady Cats. Hernandez scored on a passed ball, as Ray advanced to second with the score stretched to, 10-0, and Torres popped up to Medeles at second base, but the ball was dropped, allowing Ray to score to make the score, 11-0.
Aleman, Sanchez and Saldana, would all go down swinging to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, LaRue hit a shot to Ray at shortstop, that was fielded and thrown to first for the out and McCanick got Medeles to strike out swinging and Rosas to strike out look- ing to retire the side.
McNeese got the bottom of the fourth going with a single to second base on an error and she took second on a pitch, before McCanick hit a sacrifice grounder to second base, who got the out at first, as McNeese advanced to third on the play. Rodriguez drove in two more runs with a double to left-center field to make the score, 13-0.
Rodriguez stole third on a pitch, before Hernandez struck out swinging for out number two, but Rodriguez scored on a passed ball and Ray walked it off with a shot down the third-base line for an inside of the park homerun, as Littlefield took the contest over Dimmitt, 15-0.
