50-point outing by Ornelas lifts Hornets past Bovina

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team opened district play on Friday with a, 73-41, victory over Bovina at the Hornet’s Nest.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 8-10 overall, 1-0 in district play.

The Hornets poured in 19 points in the opening frame and added 14 in the second quarter to take a, 33-20, lead going into locker room at halftime.

Sudan outscored the Mustangs, 18-10, in the third quarter and, 22-11, in the final quarter to take the contest, 73-41.

Jaibryn Ornelas led the Hornets with 50 points, five rebounds, five steals, one assist and one block, while Aspen Reyher tallied 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals and one assist. Jacob Baker chipped in four points, five rebounds and one steal, while Marcello King contributed four points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist, and Slade Nickels finished with five points, seven rebounds, one assist and one block.

The Hornets were at Olton to take on the Mustangs on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Friday with a home game against Hale Center.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
