The range was 75 yards, or about 70 metres. This was actually a rather extraordinary shot, as Hickok was known at the time to carry a pair of .36 calibre Model 1851 navy revolvers. These pistols used a notch on top of the hammer as a rear sight, and a tapered cone or barley corn front sight. To hit Tutt in the heart, as he did, Hickok would have had to aim several inches high at that range. The gunfight was one of the few documented movie style Old West shoot outs.
