Week Five of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest is in the books, as High School teams inch closer to district play.
This week we had a lone winner at the top in Donna Neinast, who finished 17-3 this week to take first-place honors. We had four contestants tie for second place finishing with a mark of 16-4.
The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of Navy and UAB, which was 59 points.
We had two of those four contestants with the same guess on the tie-breaker of 58 points, forcing an even split of the second and third place prizes. They were David Neinast and Ivan Estrada. Brenda Herrell guessed 56 points and Martin Duran guessed 40 points.
In the High School Ranks, Littlefield defended their home field against Brownfield on Friday, taking down the Cubs, 55-9, while Olton edged out Vega, 28-21, to close out their pre-district schedule. Sudan went on the road and shutout Plains, 40- 0, while Springlake-Earth fell to Happy on Thursday, 60-34.
Anton took down Chilicothe at Motley County on Thursday, 516, while Nazareth defeated O’Donnell, 42-8. Hale Center took down Floydada, 42-20, while Roscoe defeated New Home, 266, and Abbott blasted Borden County, 88-38.
In the college ranks, Oregon defeated UCLA, 34-13, while USC rallied back to defeat Wisconsin, 38-21, and BYU defeated Baylor, 34-28. Alabama survived a late comeback attempt by Georgia, 4134, in what turned out to be an instant classic and Notre Dame clipped Louisville, 31-24.
In the NFL, the Falcons held off the Saints, 26-24, while the Colts edged out the Steelers, 27-24, and the Vivkings hung on against the Packers, 31-29. The 49ers defeated the Patriots, 30-13, and the Ravens took down the Bills in Primetime, 35-10.
Those who finished 15-5 this week were Dewayne Hayes, Johnny Rosemond, JR Herrell, Larry Ashley, Lonnie Neinast, Richard Orozco, Robin Elliott and Ronnie Martin, while those who finished 14-6 were Alma Castillo, Charlie Smith, Jan Smith, Juan Garza, Teresa Dabrowski, Terrill Moorhead and Tommy Cloninger.
13-7 finishers this week were Ed Dabrowski, JC Orozco, Maria Pinon, Micky Orozco, Sam Castillo and Stevy Smith, while James Hood and Nancy Smith each finished 12-8 this week and Jazmine Davis and Mark Grace each finished 10-10.
In the overall standings, we have a tie for the top spot this week with Brenda Herrell and Duran each sitting at 72 points. Lonnie Neinast is in second place with 70 points, while Estrada sits in third place with 69 points. Tied for fourth with 68 points are Donna Neinast, JR Herrell, Jan Smith and Stevy Smith, while Rosemond, Richard Orozco, Martin and Micky Orozco are tied for fifth with 67 points each.
David Neinast is in sixth with 66 points, while Ashley and Elliott are tied for seventh with 63 points and Moorhead is in eighth with 62 points. Hayes, Cloninger and Sam Castillo are tied for ninth with 61 points and Garza rounds out the top 10 with 59 points.
