The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team closed out the pre-district schedule with a road victory over Vega, as they took down the Longhorns, 28-21.
With the win, the Mustangs close out the first half of the season with a mark of 3-2 heading into District play.
In the first quarter, Omar Segovia broke the, 0-0, tie with a 15-yard touchdown run that was followed by the PAT to put the Longhorns in front, 70, going into quarter number two.
But, in the second frame, the Mustangs took over, as Fabian Gutierrez rushed for a three-yard touchdown, but the PAT from Chris Cabrera was no good, leaving the score, 7-6, with the Longhorns still in front. The Mustangs would strike again later in the second quarter, as quarterback, Raymond Ramirez, connected with Jaxon Tomsu, for a 30-yard touchdown pass. This time, Cabrera nailed the PAT to put Olton in front, 13-7.
Gutierrez would close out the first half for Olton with a five-yard touchdown run, and he followed it up with a rush for the two-point conversion to make the score, 21-7, going into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, Zayden Falcon caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Ramirez to make the score, 28-7, after the PAT from Cabrera. However, Vega would not go away, as Segovia broke loose for a 72-yard touchdown run to make the score, 28-15, after the two-point conversion, heading into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, Segovia rushed for a one-yard touchdown run to make it a one touchdown game, 2821, but the Mustangs would prevail, as the score stood at the final whistle.
Offensively,Ramirezwas11-15passing for 203 yards and two touchdowns.
Nathaniel Ruiz led the rushing attack with 29 carries for 155 yards, while Gutierrez tallied 17 carries for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
Jaxon Tomsu led the receiving attack with four catches for 83 yards and one touchdown, while Falcon tallied three catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Vega hauled in two catches for 40 yards, while Manny Carrasco chipped in two catches for 32 yards.
The Mustangs are open this week and will open district play on Oct. 11th when they host Floydada.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
